Bridge Humbuckers in the Neck Position

Re: Bridge Humbuckers in the Neck Position

Under this theory, I tried an SH-5 Custom in the neck position of a 24-fret SG/LP-type guitar, the Dean Deceiver, and found it bland and overly hot.

I bought a used PRS SE Santana, 22-fret version, that had a Gibson 57 Classic+ in the neck position. It sounded OK but was slightly hot for my taste; I prefer a standard 57 in neck position.

Over time, I've grown to embrace the older way of thinking, which is "whatever works in a given position". DiMarzio sometimes markets pickups as being good for both neck and bridge positions. The 36th Anniversary PAF (non-bridge version) is especially good in both positions. I like "same PAF in both neck and bridge position" setups like Gibsons with 57 Classics.

I think bridge position pickups could work in neck position if you want "more" out of the core tone of the neck version. The immediate contender in my mind is the Jazz bridge pickup. I find the Jazz neck pickup good-sounding but a bit wimpy, so it would make sense to add a little more oomph.

My quote was referring to bridge models in which the only difference between neck and bridge is a few more thousand winds on the bridge, such as the Jazz and '59 sets.

Re: Bridge Humbuckers in the Neck Position

The Nazgul seems like it would make an interesting neck pickup since it's really bright and really tight. I don't know if it'd have great cleans, but I bet the lead tone would be to-die-for.

Yeah a Nazgul /Nazgul combo might acually work in an SG...mine came with 2 57' Classic 's, not the 57'Classic +

Thanks for your response. ...under high gain, which do you prefer?

Tough choice!! I would say the StagMag is more traditional sounding for a Les Paul, while the Demon is more modern. If I had to choose between just those two pickups, I would go demon.

Re: Bridge Humbuckers in the Neck Position

Ok, ive been researching neck pick ups online and bridge pick ups used in the neck position. here are some choices to go with my SG Standard with a Nazgul in the bridge : Screaming Demon, 59/Custom, Vintage 89' JB, Full Shred Neck, Alpha Neck.
In my Lester...full on Black Winter Set for starters.

I've had great experiences with the Screamin Demon in the neck–love it paired with a Dimebucker in the bridge. Definitely worth a try!

Design-wise, a Screamin Demon is the PAF, taken directly from Seth Lover's Patent sheet, but wound with AWG#43 wire.

A lot of OEM asian p'ups from late 70s, early '80s used this very recipe, in most cases using ceramic mags.

I've seen'em in most Matsumoku-made Vantage guitars (which I've always been a fan) from that era, namely the MMK-45 p'ups. Unfortunately, the cheap materials used in their contruction didn't help with the tonal outcome.

Wouldn't that yield less DCR than the Demon has? If it had the same number of turns as a 42 gauge pickup, wouldn't that account for less copper in the coils because of the thinner wire, and, hence, less DCR?

Yup, the smaller the area of a cross section of a piece of wire, the more resistance. Picture it like a pipe, a larger pipe builds less water pressure than a thinner one.

Re: Bridge Humbuckers in the Neck Position

Sorry. Didn't know.

So a Demon is around 5,000 turns of wire ala PAF? Interesting.
