Bridge Pairing for a SD Jazz Neck

So I have both an SD Custom 4 and an SD JB bridge. I am wondering which one would pair well with a jazz neck. The guitar is H/H Tele with a rosewood neck. I’m pretty sold on the jazz neck but I’m open to other options. I play honky tonk, rockabilly, rock. Not too heavy, mostly stacking OD for a beefier sound. Any ideas? Thanks!

Both work fine, just different flavors. JB/Jazz was originally designed for an HH tele. But for honky tonk, rockabiliy I'd want something a little brighter. I might try the Custom variant.

I've never felt the JB and the Jazz were a good pairing together, personally.

I would go for the Custom. Except a Custom 5 would fit better, IMO.

JB/Jazz work well..it is a standard for a reason. I think it sounds better with 250k pots.

+1

I used to think these pups didn’t go together too. But 250K volume pots changed my mind. I’ve been considering trying 250K tone pots ever since, but I’ve never found the motivation. It sounds pretty good with the 500Ks so I’ve left it alone for now. *shrug*

Not to derail the thread, but anyone ever try a 59 SH-1B with a Jazz SH-1N? Oddly, I can’t find much feedback about this combo. Just curious.

Is this an implication that the 59B is too loud to match with a Jazz neck?

No. It's that pickups are just coils of wire and magnets and you can mate any combinations of bridges and necks in anyway you need to achieve a goal sound. In my case, I needed a T-Top type in the bridge, which is essentially 7.5k A5, and I tried T-Top replicas, and the Jazz bridge, and Jazz neck in the bridge, and the 59N was similar specs, but it's famous for being 'tubby' in the neck position, so I theorized that in the bridge, that characteristic would give the bridge position some evenness and thickness and beef to it, and I was right. I just didn't happen to pair a 59B with a JazzN. It might work fine, depends on what kind of sound you're trying to make.

It's good. I've had the combo before when I had my Ibanez Prestige.

I then replaced the Jazz with a 36th Anni, which I liked more.

But the Jazz/'59 was more balanced for sure. The '59 is scooped but beefier, so it makes for a good punchy bridge pickup. The Jazz is scooped, but it's bright, so it makes for a decent neck pickup.

Thanks for the replies. I’ve been leaning towards the Custom 5. I traded for the JB and know very little about it. While I’m at it . 59/ Custom 5? I’ve got a 59!neck also lol. I know that’s the classic rock setup.

Again...everyone assumes "match" means a certain thing. Of course, not always the same thing...

By "match" a Bridge Jazz would be the way to go

I might go with a standard 59 also
Or an Custom/59 for a little more oomph
A little punchy Rockabilly? I'd say try a P90, but a JB would work too.
