Bridge pickup for a Ibanez Apex 2?

Hi all!

I am looking for some advices in choosing a pickup.

I bought a used Ibanez Apex 2 a few months ago, with the objective of having fun with a 7 strings beast. This guitar came with the two stock Dimarzio PAF7 pickups. The thing it is that since they are identical pickups, they sound quite the same, whether at the bridge or at the neck position. Of course they sound different, but only because they are at a different position along the strings, the tone is the quite the same. I guess you understand what I mean. The neck pickup is doing a great job in my opinion, but the bridge pick up is kind of… not interesting… Hence I am looking for more versatility and diversity. With that guitar I mostly play blackened gloomy doom metal and the likes. The guitar is not a trash metal beast I’d say. Maybe good for death metal, but I am not very much in that genre. I am not a shredder, I am rather the rhythm guy of the band.

The guitar sounds very dark. Even major chord are dark on that guitar… ;) I get the feeling that not every pickups can sound good on that one. Anyone has any experience with that kind of guitar?

For now, the SD Black Winter, SD Nazgul or DM Titan seemed interesting pickups to me, making sense to you? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

The Black Winter set or a Sentient/Nazgul combo would give you what you want, with a lot of versatility and difference between neck and bridge position.

Exactly the combos I recommend. The Black Winter set is more on the versatile side...the Nazgul is purely an aggro metal pickup.

I would keep the neck PAF as it's good sounding in that guitar. Taking into consideration that the body is mahogany you would be better with brighter sounding bridge pickup to offer you more tonal diversity between two pickups. Nazgul and Black Winter are good choices and perform well in both clean and high gain situations.

Then Black Winter it will be! Thanks for your advices. I'll give updates once it will be installed and working.
