Bridge pickup for Ibanez PGM301

Hi guys! Just joined the forum after reading the posts for years. Lots of useful info around and generally nice ppl.

I bought PGM301 model made in '08 couple years ago which I really enjoy to play. It has become my 'desert island' guitar since it's capable to cover a lot of different genres and playing styles. HSH pickup routing obviously helps with the 5-way switch with auto splits for both hums. I haven't found a perfect bridge pup yet though, have tried all sorts of things from Tone Zone, Paf Pro, JB, 59/Custom Hybrid and the Norton which is in it right now. I've settled to SSL-1 in the middle and Paf Joe in the neck with Alnico II magnet.

I usually play all kinds of rock from blues to shreddy metal but need something with medium output to balance with other pickups and to split well with the middle single. The guitar itself is bright sounding with punchy mid range. Looking for pickup that has little more output and less high end than the Norton which sounds a bit too bright. I really liked the 59/Custom Hybrid in humbucker mode but hated it's split tones.

I'm really interested in the Perpetual Burn since it might be what I want in terms of overall tone. Feel free to suggest other Duncan/DiMarzio pups.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd suggest the Screamin' Demon, too. It should blend well with the middle, and it isn't so high of an output to compress everything. It generally does very well with many gain ranges, too.

Thanks for the reply! Interesting, I'm not familiar with the Screamin' Demon but after a bit of searching it might be too trebly for my taste in basswood body/all maple neck combo which is quite trebly overall. I need to do more research tho and ask my friends if anyone has one installed in a guitar I could try.

You liked the 59/C which is uber trebly and you don't think you'll like the Screamin' Demon which is also uber trebly?

I say go with your idea of the Perpetual Burn. It was designed to be the JB without the midspike so many people don't like.

Re: Bridge pickup for Ibanez PGM301

I rewired the 59/C back and after couple days decided that it's too trebly for this guitar. It has nice focus on upper midrange but the top end is just too much.

Perpetual Burn is now on the way and should arrive within 6 weeks. However, I've been suggested an interesting alternative to Norton that should have similar EQ with more output... DiMarzio Satchur8! I'll buy one of those so I can test Norton/Satchur8/Perpetual Burn/D-Activator and see which one I prefer. I'm aware all these having different tonalities to them but thats the whole point.

You could try the Evo 2 bridge as well if you don't like the Perpetual Burn. I think the PB will suit the 301 well though. What didn't you like about the stock PAF PROs in the 301?

301 came stock with Tone Zone/Evo single/Paf Pro -set when I bought it used. I didn't like PP in the neck, it was inaccurate and buzzy sounding on wound strings. I tried it in bridge but didn't like its middle frequencies. Evo single didn't balance well with the humbuckers in terms of volume.

I'll post my thoughts and possibly an audio clip when pickups arrive.
