Bridge Pickup for PRS Mushok

I'm looking to replace the bridge pickup in my PRS Mike Mushok baritone. It is 27.7" scale, mahogany body, maple neck. Roughly 7 lbs and somewhat bright in tone, mostly due to the scale length. Running it through a couple different amps (depending on my mood), 6505+ and a Mesa Triple Rectifier. musical style similar to Red, Breaking Benjamin, Alter Bridge, Sevendust, Love & Death. Typical tunings are B to G#. I want fat but pronounced palm mutes, clear and articulate chords, and NOT scooped in tone. I like mids. I have a JB in a similar guitar and love it but need just a slight bit more bottom end definition. Definitely love the mids and highs from it though. I don't like active pickups and typically prefer warmer tones. Thoughts and opinions? Thanks

Re: Bridge Pickup for PRS Mushok

Have you seen the Keith Merrow vid where he demos 12 different pickups? He's using a Baritone guitar tuned to Drop Bb. It's kind of old now so it doesn't include newer models like the Black Winter, or Nazgul.

However, I have had the Mushok PRS in the past, and had the exact same amps as you. I had considered putting a Distortion into it, like my Les Paul. It's got plenty of mids, tight bass, and all the output you'd want. Nothing but chunky, chugga-chugga goodness.

JB vibe with bigger sound? You're describing Alt8. It also has clarity, articulation and definition that you seek for downtuning.

I read your post a few times to be clear what you are asking for. And you are asking for a lot. Which is a good reason to ask on the forum since you have a lot of needs as far a pickup goes. The best I could think of for you is the new "Black Winter" pickup. It may have a flatter EQ than you would like, but there's always give and take with a pickup. I think that one would be best for you.

Re: Bridge Pickup for PRS Mushok

Thanks guys, I had been doing some hard research on the Alt 8, Black Winter, and Nazgul. I'm leaning towards the Alt 8 because I'm afraid the Nazgul will sound too saturated and the Black winters might be too extreme. I like a lot of clarity, play a lot of chords that need to be very articulate. How would you guys describe the tone of the BW vs Alt 8?

Re: Bridge Pickup for PRS Mushok

Well, I think the Black Winters due to their flat EQ have a lot of clarity especially under high gain. This video might help a bit.

I have seen that video and watched it multiple times, replaying particular sections. Its a shame it doesn't have the black winter or nazgul, etc on there. I really liked the Alt 8 on that recording, even though it may have had a bit too much mid. Albeit he mentions in the video notes that his particular guitar was very mid heavy anyway. The JB was also really killer in that guitar too as well. And there's a guy on YouTube with a Mushok with a JB/Jazz set ran DI and his tone was ridiculously amazing. Very clear and articulate but with enough crunch.
