Bridge Pickups in the Neck

Specifically the strat sized humbuckers, thinking about trying a Lil 78 bridge pickup with a hot bridge pickup like the Brandon Ellis Dyad.

Also looking at the Red Devil.

I know the Air Norton was originally supposed to be a bridge pickup and that is one of my favorite Dimarzio pickups in the neck.

Any thoughts or experiences?

ive not tried either of those pups in the neck. i dont think the red devil bridge would be great in the neck, but the lil 78 could have potential. 500k pots for sure though

I agree with you. I have a lil 59 which came in a used guitar I bought, I assume it's a neck version and it sounds great. I'm sure the Red Devil is a tweaked lil 59. Has higher resistance, although that does not necessarily mean it's hotter, I have noticed I do like a lot of pickups with higher resistance.

The lil 78 I think would be more interesting to try a bridge version in the neck with a hot bridge humbucker in the bridge. I think this is how I'm going to do it.

Having a pretty hot bridge pickup in the neck is definitely...a sound. I don't think it is common due to the compression and the fact that the bridge pickup would have to be really hot to balance, but hey, some people make it work.

the red devil strat bridge pup is middy and fat, which is why i doubt it would be a good neck pup. even with 500k pots and a hot bridge bucker

Yeah, I don't think it would work well, either, but some people put a JB in the neck, which would be terrible to me.

I've intentionally mounted a Cool Rails bridge in neck position of my main Swiss army knife stage guitar. It has a series parallel switch. Series = P90 territory. Parallel = Fender single coil vibe. Really useful to me these last decades. YMMV.

I know Andy TImmons uses bridge model Dimarzio Cruisers in neck and middle positions of his guitars.

I went ahead and ordered a neck version of the Red Devil, still curious about the lil 78 though. If I find a decent deal on a used one I may grab it and give it a try, if not I will just get the neck one.

Anyone try any of the lil 78s?

Who defies a pickup to be a "bridge pickup" or "neck pickup"? In the 50s, PAFs werent wound like this. Nor werent at Fender either. As far asi know, it is all started with Seymour Duncan. He wound jazz and '59 neck and then every pickup maker produced "calibrated" neck and bridge models :)

It really matters most when you are dealing with higher output pickups. Having those in the neck position can overdrive the input of an amp in a not-so-nice way. PAFs didn't have 'neck' or 'bridge'- I think they grabbed whatever was in the queue in front of them on the line. But the overpowered monsters of the modern era (post late 70s) means that a 'calibrated' set just makes more sense.

It's a lot easier to put a neck pickup that "doesn't belong in the bridge" in the bridge than visa versa. But I've had both a JB2 and CC in the neck of a Les Paul that sounded great. The JB less so
