I know this has probably been asked 1000 times, but I'm getting irritated with the 500T pickup in my Explorer. I been thinking JB because I'm stuck in the 80's hair metal genre, with a little Kiss, Zep, and AC DC thrown in as well. But I also hear the JB is not good for home use, which is me. Only at home and on a Tech 21 TM 60. Also have an LP Studio and those pickups, 490/498 I like pretty well. Almost always a rhythm player as well if that helps any.

If it's mainly rythm you're playing I'd recomend a C5, works a treat in my Tokai Explorer. Nice tight low end for chugging.

A Custom works perfectly with an Explorer. I tried a few different sets when I had an explorer and the Custom just matched up really well with it. The Pearly gates neck is a perfect match up in the neck position.

The Custom 5 is not a bad idea either but, it can be on the bright side of the spectrum. If your guitar is darker, it would be a decent choice.

It should do great with that genre of music also.

You mentioned the JB and it is really a love it or hate it pickup. If you had a super strat I would say go for it but, a JB can be more looser than normal in Gibsons. A JB has a big high/mid spike that cuts really well in a band situation and IMO, it is more of a lead players pickup in most guitars due to a this. IMO, if you play mostly rhythm, the flabby bottom of the JB will get on your nerves.
