Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

I've got a C5 in the bridge of my guitar. To my ears, the C5 is really great for funk. As for metal, though it has tight low-end and plenty output, but is still not ideal for modern metal powerchords/palm muting stuff. It just sounds a little vintage and not quite huge/in-your-face (slightly on the thinner side). That's why my search has continued...

I'm searching for a bridge pickup that is great both for funk and modern metal (powerchords/palm muting stuff).

I'm thinking SH-5 Custom and install coil split for funk, but I'm not really sure about the sound on the funk side. Perhaps I should look elsewhere, like DiMarzio? What's your recommendation, please?

My guitar is Godin Exit 22 (HSS, mahogany body, rosewood fingerboard). For other positions, I'm planning to go with SSL-2 (mid) and APS-2 (neck).

Enjoy your funk. Enjoy your metal... just please, please don't try to put them together. :)

Good luck finding your pup.

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

I won't pretend to be an authority on funk or modern metal, but the Custom is certainly a very versatile pickup that bridges the vintage/modern gap. I hear it splits really well, though I haven't tried that myself.

You only have to buy a ceramic magnet and put it in your C5 to give the Custom a try.

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

to cover ground thats that far apart you are gonna have to give a little...your best bet is gonna be something that you dig for metal then can live with split for funk tones...like a Custom or a Distortion the only other thing I could suggest would be to get something not as hot (like say a 59) to do the funk with and then when it comes time to do the metal just get more from your amp...

Hows about the JB? It will do palm muting stuff and it's got that darker tone rather than that peppy EVH sound I found in the Custom Custom.

I really want to try a C5 in my strat, but I won't sell the JB.

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

Thank you very much for the input so far. :)

I do love the way C5 sounds in clean (unsplitted). I think its bite and attack fit really well with funk. The only problem is with metal. It can do metal, but sounds a little lacking at that -- a little too vintagey and lacking body a bit.

I suppose it could be pretty hard to find a pup that fits both genre well, since I think a bright and a little mid-scoopy pup suits funk pretty well, but modern metal needs a bit more mid-range/body for bigger sound. That's why I think the Custom (with splitting option) might suit the task.

As for JB in metal, I heard that it's better suited to lead tone rather than rhythm tone, and I don't do much lead. But it's just me hearing from someone else though.

So now I'm pretty tempted to try the Custom. What do you think? Is there a better alternative, in your opinion?

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

I'm going to beat Jeff to it this time, the PATB-1. Fat enough for metal, but articulate enough for cleaner tones. Other than that, the Custom would probably be a good choice. You could always get a ceramic magnet from Bada Bing and change your C5 to a Custom, that would be the most cost effective first step.

Another one to try would be a Bill Lawrence L500-L.

The other thing to do is get a SD-1 or TS9 as a booster for the metal tones, they will fill out the midrange for more chunk with the C5.

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

Maybe Dimarzio's would fit your needs more...
Try the D-sonic, Evo2, or Steve's Special... They have a more modern sound and can get decent split tones for funk.

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

I'm surprised at you people.

Just get a Duncan Distortion, then either wire it with a switch in parallel OR even better, use a switch to put it out of phase with the neck pickup. The both pickups on tone will be the ultimate funk tone.

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

If the C5 is good at funk, why not try using an EQ pedal or booster for a metal tone?

Re: Bridge pup for funk AND modern metal

I'd go with a JB. It'll have an Alnico 5 magnet like the C5 but with improved palm mutes. Anything with a ceramic magnet might not hit those vintage tones. I have one in a mahogany, maple/rosewood guitar and it does rhythm just fine. I play a modern metal influenced style.

If you can do funk split, I'd say do the JB thing with wiring for splitting it, so that you can do funk split and metal in humbucker mode. However, the Custom can also do this stuff, so it's worth mentioning. I'd say that the general concensus is that Megadeth = JB, yet most nu-metal is the Custom. I can't comment on the Custom, but I have a JB, and it can do funky tones split and humbucker, and it can do metal, but nothing ultra-insane like some of the newer ultra-hard-core nu-metal bands.
