Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

(This a re-post of a opinion i gave on another post)

I can say this about Ernie Ball Cobalt's, only the wrapped strings are cobalt plated. The tone you get is pretty darn bright in the bridge, so i really recommend backing off the tone knob.
But if you like to have your guitar pup's set to the middle selection or neck you can get great jazzy runs and really silky leads on those positions.

I don't think the price justifies the results, if are going to record with them or play live absolutely, but i cant get behind them for everyday use so far.
That is where i am at so far in my experience.

There are some unanswered question floating around other forums especially the Ernie ball forums. I have personally seen peoples posts asking if cobalt is toxic and if the strings will wear frets out over normal usage, that's just on the EB forums. I hope i have given sufficient enough explanation.

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

Absolutely love these strings and keep them around (buy them) in bulk. I will likely never use anything else.

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

Just played them through my amp (an early Crate VC5212) and the Vox Tonelab set to '68 Plexi and they sounded even better than the first run through. I've been working them in acoustically over the past couple of days. They sound awesome (warm & creamy, and very articulate). I played at a decent volume so I got a good sense of how they'll sound cranked up (which I'll do this weekend).

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

OK. Upon further researching it, it turns out that only the E,A, & D are cobalt. The rest are a tin plated steel. I would have thought steel would make them too bright, which is why I've always used nickel plated strings (or so I thought). It also turns out that Regular Slinkys are only nickel plated on the E, A, & D, with the rest being tin plated steel.

In spite of this new info, I still think the Cobalts are great and I'll use both the Regular Slinkys and Cobalts going forward depending on which sounds better on a particular guitar.

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

The only new strings I've played in a long while are the Dean Markley "JIMI HENDRIX" Strings. The funny thing is I don't think I sounded anymore like Jimmy after I changed the strings then before I did. What a Rip Off!!!! I guess it's what to expect when you pay under $2.00 per set..!

Dave,

Be careful with those Hendrix strings. If you read the small print, it says that one side-effect is possible choking on your own vomit. Just be careful 'Ol buddy!

Paul Gilbert likes the extra bendiness of the lower strings with the Cobalts.

Paul's a straight shooter so and if he likes their feel, there must be something to them...

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

I prefer the titanium coated Ernie Balls. I think the Colbalts are okay, and I don't mind them, but I would just prefer regular Ernie Balls for about $3 a set where I live, or the titanium coated ones. I also am surprised that I like DR Black Beauties.

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

will be trying a pack after reading this thread!
I always loved the EB rock and rolls so these must be killer!

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

I use them on all of my electric guitars. Yes they're pricier than a regular set of Slinkys but the sound difference is worth the extra cost to me. The only down side, if you can call it one is a little extra string talk, which is only noticed when I'm playing by myself. Non-issue to me. It's hard for me to explain what I hear as far as why I like them over other strings but it's like anything, we all have our own tastes, and if these fit yours, by all means get'em.

So the JACKSON guitars like these? I had problems with d'addarios on my jacksons. do they have any rattle/buzz "real bad" like the d'addarios did? and the freakin d'addarios would not hold tune with a OFR!:smack::cussing:
can you belieive that ****?
:laugh2:

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

I've used Ernie Ball's forever and for a short while when I started I used GHS Boomers, which I liked the sound of them but kept breaking them a lot. The Jacksons love them I only full float one of my guitars my Model 2 all of my others have a homemade trem stop on them. I prefer to bend for up notes and dive with the bar. As far as staying in tune, once you get them stretched they stay in tune for a whole show and that's enough for me. But like any string I have to retune with temp changes but once it's set it stays.

Re: Brief Review of Ernie Ball Cobalts

I loved picking up a ton of different strings and trying them out on both electric and acoustic guitars, as it is so subjective it's all part of the disease I suppose!!

For now these are as mentioned in my earlier post my go to strings for all my electrics (solid body and hollow/semi hollow) while I exclusively use Newtone Master Class Double Wounds (.011-.050) on my 6 string acoustic electrics. I only wish they (Newtone) made these for acoustic 12 strings!!

If anyone has solid reco's for acoustic 12's and or something I should consider on my hollow body guitars (I will keep the EB's for the semi hollows) I would love to hear what you use and why you dig them.
