I learned that Fender owned Guild while the DeArmonds were made. That's why the 90's Korean DeArmonds were so good. Then, DeArmond got discontinued for a few years, and Fender decided to reintroduce them by the Squier division. The new ones are lower in quality, but the mid-late 90's DeArmonds are killer guitars for LOW money. My 98 DeArmond M-72 is just about the same quality as my Gibson LP's, and I only paid $275 for it!

The Fender story in a few paragraphs. Leo sold Fender for 13 million. I wonder how much Fender Musical Instruments would be worth today??

13 million back in '65... and then CBS drove it and quality into the ground. Fender is still a private company, right?

13 million was a lot of money in 1965. If you had an inflation chart going back that far, one could calculate what that would be today. IRRC, the average yearly household income in the US was well below $10,000 at that time. A typical brand new car was about $2500.
The strat and tele are two of the most important guitars ever, BTW. The strat is obviously the most copied guitar in history. 75% of guitars in existance are either strats or somekind of a strat derivative. Many of the other companie's solid body electrics would not have even been brought to market without the success of Fender's "plank" guitars.
The real important contribution was the amps. That's what made the electric guitar what it was, and is, not only for Fender guitars, but for all electric guitars. Most amps today are really developments of the Fender Tweed or BF amps. That had the biggest impact on the music and how it evolved. Music based on the electric guitar has a huge impact on western culture overall.

I think you could say that he put MM on the map. I'm very unclear about what happened, but things didn't work out very well at MM. I think the G&L situation was a lot better for him, all around

The FMIC Fender couldn't innovate their way out of a wet paper bag. They do a decent job catering to markets though.
Fender from the '50s introduced a lot of amp designs that're still being used. Marshall's first amps were pretty much a copy of the Tweed Bassman. It's not that Fender didn't borrow circuits to design their amps, but how they applied them is what mattered.
I'd say that early Fender was very influential in amp designs. Sort of, like inventing the fork.
