What do you all think is the brightest sounding preamp tube, past or present?

12AX7 / ECC83? .... Maybe EH or Tungsol for new production but I'm sure you'll get a lot of differing opinions. In terms of the tubes of yesteryear, some of the Telefunkens were considered bright but I don't know about "brightest".

Cheap Chinese valves are often thin and shrill ...

Which one would you guys pick as having a more brilliant sounding presence? One that really makes the high end sparkly.

Back around 2003, I bought a ****-ton of current manufacture 12AX7s.

The brightest (and perhaps not surprisingly, most detailed) I found were Sovtek 12AX7-LPS's.

Tung sol-new production- has alot of bright sparkly stuff on top.

I was just asking Eddie at Eurotubes the same thing yesterday. I wanted to know if I could somewhat brighten up my 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb amp with other tubes and which ones. He said probably V1 and V2 tubes changed to ECC803 would be brighter than ECC83(12ax7) JJ tubes. I was going to order a couple to see.

I like the JJ803S a whole lot more than their 83S. Tungsol RI is another tube thats brighter & has a lot of harmonics. I find it to be a a better improvement over the EHX12ax7. If considerng the JJ83S then also consider the mullard Ri, its more balanced sounding but not as bright as a tungsol ri.

The new Svetlana 12AX7's are pretty sparkly on top without being thin/shrill. Nice full mids & decent bass too..

Yep..the svet, tung sol, and ehx are all the same family...slight build difference...the svetlana has the sweetest high end of thr bunch, but the tungsol iis a little brighter and sparkly..the ehx is little darker and not as sweet as fhe svet. Svetlana is my fave of all three, really.

Yeah, it's got warmth/sweetness too...I like it better than the other two as well.

I don't find the LPS to be "bright". Brighter than the JJ 83S but not "bright and sparkly". But, if you don't like that LPS in V1, try it in the PI slot.
