Bring my rig to college???

I'm heading to college soonish and I was wondering if it is acceptable to being an electric guitar (MIM Strat), a guitar amp (Mustang III V2), and a pedalboard (pedaltrain metro20)? Also possibly an acoustic? Or is it too much? Is the amp too big, do I need to get something like a Yamaha thr10 amps etc?

Any advice/experience would be appreciated :)
Thanks

I kinda need the pedalboard because I create a ton of looping music with boss rc-30 etc.

Re: Bring my rig to college???

It depends on the size of your room and where you are going to college. Stuff disappears in dorms. I would bring the acoustic until I got a feel for the surroundings of my gear. You can take the Strat and Mustang after the Thanksgiving break after you get a feel for the place.

Agreed on accoustic. Get a feeling for what is safe. Our band rented rehearsal space that was robbed and apartment broken into (by an idiot who tried to sell gear to our nextdoor neighbor and did jail time as a result)

Re: Bring my rig to college???

When I went to college, I took two electric guitars (plus a third I acquired on break), my Roland JC120, a rack preamp, and a ridiculous pile of pedals and a Digitech floor board. If I were going to live in a dorm room now, I'd take one electric guitar and one of those iPad interfaces. The full rig was absurd and horribly impractical.

On second thought, I'd leave all the electric stuff at home and take my mandolin. My vote is for the acoustic guitar.

Re: Bring my rig to college???

I'd bring a cheap electric and a headphone amp. That way there's no chance of any major losses if something is stolen, and you don't bother the neighbors.

Re: Bring my rig to college???

Keep it simple; take an acoustic. Dorm rooms are way small and uncoils open a great deal of the time to a lot of people strolling in and out.

Talk to your folks, and see if they can get a rider on their homeowner's insurance policy that will cover your gear at school...no matter what gear you take.

Take lots of detailed pics of your gear and be sure to record serial numbers and identifying marks.

I loaned a guitar to my nephew when he went off to Tulane and it was stolen, along with his laptop.

I occasionally had mine in my dorm, back in the day. Not sure I'd do that now.

I hate thieves.

In college.

Pretty much every friend I know that's lived in a dorm (from a variety of campuses) has some sort of dorm break-in story, whether it was them, a friend, a neighbor, etc. Don't leave any valuables in the dorms. Period. If it's not some stranger just breaking in, the more likely scenario is it's probably someone who knows your + any roommate's daily routines (like some bozo down the hall, if it's not the roommate him/herself).

I strongly recommend an instrument that you wouldn't care to lose, whether it be an acoustic or electric. If it's an acoustic, you get to be *that guy* on college campuses that hangs out under some tree with his shirt off just strumming the same three chords trying to impress any girls that have the misfortune of passing by.

I would bring electric and headphone amp. Acoustic will be too loud at certain times. But it depends on the building, people etc.
