Brobucker Magnet Swaps: Complete Report. UOA5, A2, DGA5, A5

Re: Brobucker Magnet Swaps: Complete Report. UOA5, A2, DGA5, A5

I see! Thanks. Have A2 in the bridge and an A3 in the neck. Want to increase the output and add some attack to the bridge, I think an UOA5 is just what the doc ordered. Also want to swap the A3 in my neck pup for an A2, but worried it might make it too dark in comparison to the bridge. Will do things one step at a time :)

I've made the A3 neck/UOA5 bridge mag swap in several Gibson guitars loaded with '57 Classics.

Worked very well even if I'm not a fan of those p'ups.

Yes, one step at a time is a good idea. Some A2 bridge PU's just don't have enough cut and bite for my tastes; there's treble there, but it's 'in the background'. Steak knife vs a butter knife. I need the cutting edge of a steak knife in my tone. UOA5's are a great option for a PGB, Seth, A2P, or Ant if you're not getting that slicing tone you want.

I have the same issue with some A2 neck PU's...the good news is there's lots of mids and a big sound, but the downside is a very rounded high end. Too soft and mellow for what I want. I found an A3 in my PGN (in an LP Std) made it more cutting and aggressive; better definition too. Since an UOA5 has more treble (but not as much as an A3), it's also a good option in a PGN.

+1. Gibson uses '57's in so many models these days, and A2's just aren't the right magnet for them. I don't understand their reasoning. Swap mags, and you have a good-sounding PU. But in my opinion, you're better off just getting an A2 Duncan PAF instead. Odds are the stock mags will sound better in them.

I think it's going to be a winning combo. Just a tough comprimise, cause I want that thick mushy neck tone, but if it's too dark, it'll be useless. On the other hand, the A3 really has a lovely shimmer about the treble.
