Broke my pickup out of its casing….

So I was adjusting the pole pieces on my duckbucker and, as some of you know, those screws are a little hard to turn. So I was applying a moderate amount of pressure so the tiny flat head screw driver would stay in the groove, and I ended up pushing too hard and the pickup popped out of the white plastic casing. Any way I can secure this back into place? Right now I have electrical tape holding it in the short term. Thanks in advance!

Could you post some pics so we can take a closer look?

Re: Broke my pickup out of its casing….

I’m at work right now, but I’ll try to do that when I get home this evening. The best way to describe it in the short term is to look at the picture of the Duckbucker on this site, and imagine taking the white cover off, exposing the “guts” of the pickup. Basically I pushed too hard on the poles and the “guts” came out of the white casing….the casing stayed in place because it’s screwed to the pickguard, and the poles and guts pushed through to the inside of the guitar….if that makes sense. I thought it would snap back into place, but I guess it’s usually glued or something, maybe. I took my pickguard off (It’s a Strat by the way) and put a piece of electrical tap on the underside of the pickup with about a half inch wrapping around the side of the pickup casing that’s recessed under the pickguard. You can’t see anything different when the guitar is re-assembled, but it’s just not 100% secure and I don’t like the thought of electrical tape holding my rig together.

Edit: I guess it's actually a black cover in the picture on this site.

They're glued in place, and you can re-apply superglue to the area. You should be able to see where we glued around the border. If you use a superglue gel, you can get more on there, and squish it around. But definitely test the pickup first, to make sure you didn't tear any coil wires on the way out. And be very careful with it while it's in this "opened" state, because there are coil wires exposed, going to the PCB via little pins, and if you flex the circuit board, you can tear the coil wires.

Ok great thank you. I'm pretty sure the pickup is ok, it sounds like it's working just as usual. I didn't push it to far out of the casing, maybe a quarter inch at max. I've never heard of super glue gel. Is that something you can get at Lowes or would Guitar Center have something?

Edit: looks like Loctite makes super glue gel. I used their Sumo Glue to keep my strap pegs from coming loose out of the body of the guitar, and that stuff is freaking amazing...super strong!

+5 for the gel version of the super glue! It's awsome stuff, as t frank stated you can get it on there and it dosnt run all over the place, and while it still drys fast like uperglue it gives you slightly longer working time too. I prefeer the Permatex brand, you can buy it at any Automotive parts store, auto zone for you folks in the US, ect, auto value, napa, ect ect ect. If not any home depot ect will have some brand of super glue, just try to get gel version.

Mike.

Ok so I wanted to upload a few photos of the repair in case anyone ever needs to do the same thing. Unfortunately I didnt think about snapping some shots until I did the repair so I don't have one of the broken pickup, but basically the pickup inside came out of the white casing and I needed to glue it back in.

Loctite Super Glue Gel. The gel makes the application easier to do and more controllable.

Apply it along the 2 long edges.

Allow time to dry. I let mine sit overnight before I put it back together.

Done!
