Broken dreams

Re: Broken dreams

OMG - people.....let's get some focus here. You all have messed up priorities.

So - #1 most important thing is to ALWAYS look cool.

Between pickups, magnets, pots/caps, pedals, Multifx, and assorted rack gear - we can make it sound good. And if you are STILL placing "feel" over pure bad @$$ery in the looks department...well, you are clearly too old for rock and roll!!!!

Own your look, and you always look cool. If you sound cool. To yourself.

Re: Broken dreams

First, Ill apologize if this seems silly or childish.. But, Someone else may have gone thru it..

The issue...
Ever since I was little. (cant recall exactly what triggered it, but...)

I have forever been in love with the Explorer/Hamer standard guitar shape. Visually it was/is my dream guitar.. However...

I have an Explorer and tho I REALLY like it, I dont LOVE it.. I love it for sentimental reasons and visually, it is bad A$$ to me.. But.. I playing wise, I prefer Charvel necks, bigger frets AND the explorer seems to not want to stay in tune.

And, honestly, I have other guitars that sound better to my half deaf ears.

So, Im kinda crushed.. I LOVE the way it looks, How bad a$$ I feel with it strapped on and the way I feel a dream has kinda been fulfilled that I have one. BUT.. As MUCH as I want it to be my number 1, It just isnt
ticking all the boxes for me.

Anyone else have the same experience?? Suggestions??

Thanks for reading.. Im just upset cuz Ive loved these for so long and love the one I have... Just cant get it to be number 1

Go to Warmoth and build your Explorer (bolt-on, cuz that's how they roll) the way you want.

I had a stock mid-90s Marshall JTM45 reissue that sounded like poop. I learned about the various old school Marshall circuits
and learned how to mod and wire it up with a PTP kit and various replacement parts. It's now exactly the way I want it (1968 50 watter circuit).

If you don't like something someone else created, learn how to create your own. Then the sky's the limit.

And guitars are much easier to build than amps.

Re: Broken dreams

Thank you all for the input ! Glad Im not alone, but sad for those that have also gone thru this as it's no fun.

Not gonna reply with quotes, cuz there would be too many, but here are some replies...

First, Budget right now isnt allowing for a new guitar purchase.. I really need to downsize. Maybe if I move some stuff....

As far as a Warmoth build.. Have considered it often. However, not really wanting a bolt on.

Ive not had the chance to play one of the Schecters, but I know they make great stuff. Biggest thing with a diff brand is that I love the headstock on the explorer. Part of the appeal for me.. Probably petty, but again... Its what I like.

Ive looked at the edward's and have owned an Edwards John Sykes. Great axe!! I just figured it would be nearly the same as what I have since they typically are clones of certain models. HOWEVER, I agree with what was said about playing different guitars as some are indeed livelier than others. But as far as feature set, fret size, fretboard shape. Wont be much different than what I have. I have also seen the model with the older style layout. Only negative for me with that, is I believe it only comes in like flat black.

My Explorer came stock with Grover keys, so I could probably try a different set of keys. Shouldnt require drilling or modification.
Mine is a 2002 limited run that came with Grover keys, mirror pick guard and truss cover.

For those who mentioned the Carvin v220. Yes, I lusted for one of those for years too. I bought a used one a few years ago and didnt gel with it. Nothing negative about the model.. It played well. But the way it was spec'd buy the original buyer, didnt work for me. Was maple body and neck and was heavy and too bright for my liking.

I wish I could try some others. They are just very few and far between new, and Id be afraid to buy used as no guarantee it will be any different. (would want to try first)

I have considered having one built. There is a guy that builds them and I could spec fret size and some other things. (plus, I could get the Gibson or Hamer shaped headstock). Again, just need some money..

For the tuning issue you may do something like installing locking tuners.
Right, Charvel frets are nice.

And hey ! Lemmy said "If you get one that looks good, you can always mess with the pickups if it sounds bad".

Just cant get it to be number 1

For me I often felt sorry for the Number 2 (Tele) which could deserve to be number 1, but that's because of number 1 (Strat)...

A totally opposite experience : Last month I bought a guitar just because I loved its neck... Never heard about this model before and I did not care about its body shape. I started to appreciate the shape after (First time this happen to me)... But it has a serious tuning issue I'm working on now.

Re: Broken dreams

The LTD Explorer clone would likely have the type of neck you are looking for, only available with EMGs though. No trem options either but well worth trying if you get a used one and swap the pups for something else like EMG retroactives (a solderless swap with the stock pups, takes no time/skill to do), ,,,,,,,,,,

Re: Broken dreams

Phil Campbell's favorite guitar for live shows was a LAG Explorer (expensive one) made in France (which is fun to me because i thought all guitars were imports here!)

You do not like the Epi Korina ?

Re: Broken dreams

Just to clarify, Bloodrose, I am not recommending you buy a additional guitar, I am saying find an Explorer you like and then sell the one you have. Should be roughly a break-even proposition.

Always buy used and buy wisely. I have made oney on every guitar I ever sold. Dozens of them.

Re: Broken dreams

I knew what you meant Dave... No worries! LOL, I have LOST money on nearly everything I have sold..... :censored:

Re: Broken dreams

Evan47: The LTDs are bolt on arent they??

Francois: Nothing against Epis. However, I prefer black explorers. Not keen on the Korina color.

Re: Broken dreams

Definitely been there before.

I tried for AGES to have the perfect Les Paul. I would try to convince myself it was better than it really was, but in my heart I knew it just wasn't.

I bought a couple of explorer's for something different and the feel was fantastic. I had always wanted an explorer from the time I was young, so I gave it a shot.

Both explorer's played phenomenal. I just traded my ebony one for the 1990 LP Classic and I am very pleased. I kept the one in Heather Mist finish, so after years and years of playing, I'm finally content with TWO solid electrics, and now I can't decide which one I like better. I guess it's not too bad of a problem to have though!!

Re: Broken dreams

There might be the right Explorer out there for you. Just play as many as you can and you might find the right one. I have tried to build the perfect guitar and have been disappointed. I have tried to buy the right guitar based on specs. Then I built a guitar to use up spare parts with plans of giving it away. It was the right one. You never know. Maybe old Kramers are more the right ones for you. That's why we are poly-guitar owners.

Re: Broken dreams

That's the experience I had with a '69 LP Custom I once had. Always wanted one, loved its beauty, but just couldn't jell with it.
