broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

my EVH phase 90 quit working a while ago, it wouldn't turn on, the LED wouldn't light and the battery would get blazing hot within seconds of hooking it up. someone had told me it may be a bad switch since the LED wouldn't go on when the switch was pushed. so today i replaced the switch and..................NOTHING. it has same battery heat up, no lit up led, and no sound problem as before. anyone have any ideas what this can be?

thanks!

sounds to me like it's gonna blow up!....get out your geiger-counter and take a reading!

or perhaps the licensing agreement with MXR and EVH ran out?

:6:

J/K Bro..sorry, couldn't resist... :)

Re: broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

Those switches aren't easy to replace. They're on a small board with a ribbon cable that runs to the main board right? If so, it may be in the wrong orientation, or there is more wrong with the switching components than just the switch. If the battery is getting hot, there's a problem somewhere else. The battery should never get hot.

Re: broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

yup it's just new MXR overpriced junk with a rock stars name on it LOL. sadly though it does sound damn good when it works....when it works :smack: my 1979 MXR distortion + lasted longer than this before it needed some parts swapped out.

as for the switch it's direct to the board. it took me no time at all to swap in the new one and i know i put it in right so that's not the problem nor did it fix the problem. :smack:

to be honest i don't even need the pedal i use my Line 6 MM4 now but i would like to get this working again since it again does sound pretty damn good.

the hot battery does scare me...no idea what could make it do that.

a short in the battery hookup connector/cable could .. just like putting a piece of wire between the terminals of a 9V battery

Re: broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

Did you replace the switch with the exact same type as what was on there? PC-mounted switches are different than the normal DPDT and 3PDT that you can get and solder wires to. The terminals are smaller.

I know the early runs of the Wylde OD's had switch problems, they have the ribbon hookup, so your Phase 90 might have the same problem.

Leave the back off and test it out. See if the battery is hot then. Could be something is touching the back cover making it short on it which can make the battery get hot.

Re: broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

very true but i looked at that and didn't see any visable issues with it. it also doesn't work if i use wall power though.

since it was open and on my bench i decided to take pics since people love pics of pedal guts LOL. this is with the new switch...

Re: broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

the fact that it doesnt work with the wall wart might feed my theory further

disconnect the battery and use an ohm meter to see if there is a short between the battery terminals of the battery connector

Re: broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

GAHHHH!!!!! The thing is SMT components. Good luck getting it working again. Makes me value my orange one that much more, which isn't SMT but has a multi-layer board...also a PITA.

I'm with Bill, it's a power supply issue somewhere, possibly a fried component. In the second pic, there's a little SMT component to the bottom left of the switch, right across from the battery snap connector, on the edge of the board. It doesn't look like the one next to it. Is it burn or broken?

Re: broken phase 90...pedal gurus please step in...

when i connect it to the ohm meter i get 1 when the ohm meter is connected to itself it reads 0...i think i'm using it right but i'm also a bit slow when it comes to that damn multi meter and get a bit mixed up with what settings i should have it on to do what. so i may have had it on the wrong setting.

nothing looks fried on the board...just a bunch of cheap crap LOL.

There ya go....LOL. If I ever get another phaser, it'll be one of those. As of right now though I'm not even using the one I have. It's a tone sucker unfortunately.

If you are reading ohms, you've got pretty much a dead short across the battery terminals, I'll bet your wall wart started heating up pretty quickly when it was hooked up too:smokin: Can't tell what it is from the pix, it's probably nothing major, but can't really tell without some pokin' and probin' of my own.

hmmm ... that is not consistant with what i would expect

i expect a dead short to be zero ohms -just a piece of conductor connecting + to - terminals

i expect an 'open' to be infinite ohms

i'm outta ammo for remote diagnosis, sorry

good luck

1 ohm, 0 ohms, not much difference... Of course, I could be reading his post wrong.
