'Buckers For SG Standard?

I am looking for that sort of Wolfmother tone, able to do Sabbath and Ledd Zepp as well.
I thought a JB / '59 combo would sound cool for this.
What do you think?

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

59 set would work better IMO. If you want a higher output bridge a C5 or Custom.. But I still think 59 is Great for that...

+1. I don't think a JB is the best choice for the bands you mentioned.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

"I think you are insane for wanting a Wolfmother tone." Hahaha. Sorry?

Okay cool, thanks. I will probable go with a '59 set when the time comes.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

go for the custom 5 in the bridge and 59 in the neck. I just never found the 59 bridge to be fat enough, it always seems to be lacking something

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

I have the C5 and Jazz in my SG Std and am happy with the tone. I originally had a 59 in the neck but found it to be too boomy for my liking. The Rio Grande BBQ is another pup that's supposed to sound good in a SG.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

I have a '59 and C5 in mine. Bought the guitar with those in it, so I can't compare with other set-ups. Initially, I thought I would change them out to something else, but I keep getting the tones I want...now I refuse to change them. Very versatile and warm sounding. I agree that at times the '59 may feel a little boomy on the lows, but I have a tendency to play with the volume control which helps with that. I like the idea of the Jazz in the neck, too. That I could be persuaded to try. Have one in an old Iceman and really like it. Let us know what you come up with.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

How different is the Jazz from the '59?
I'll see if I can find a guitar with a C5 in the bridge, as I have never played one.
Can turning the volume or tone controls down a bit get rid of the boominess in the '59 without cutting too much?
Thanks for the replys, btw.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

Closest thing to what was in the Sabbath SG for those "classic" :smack: recordings would be two 59b's.

But I'd suggest a 59n and 59b.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

Would a '59b sound less boomy in the neck than a '59n?

It'd sound more boomy...but in the early 60's Gibson SG's like Iommi used with Sabbath and Clapton used with Cream no one had started calibrating HB pickups yet...the neck and bridge pickups were identical and both were wound just like the Duncan 59B.

But I'd go for a 59n and 59b...they'll be better balanced.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

Ah okay. How well would a C5b & '59n be balanced?
I have yet to try the pickups, so I just want a kind of broad idea.
How different does the Jazz sound from the 59 in the neck?

I'm down to 3 combinations,
'59b / '59n
C5b / '59n
C5b / Jazz neck.

Re: 'Buckers For SG Standard?

On SGs my first choice would be a Brobucker bridge and A2P-B in the neck.

But then again I don't like the SG tone that much. These pickups would make it more like a LP.

PS. The neck pickup slot of the SGs is a little bit closer to the bridge when compared to LPs. Thus, you'd have a brightere neck tone when compared with LPs. Thus, A2P-B helps to make it thicker.
