Buckle Rash Prevention?........

Most of the pants I wear are a little big around the waist and I need to wear a belt with them. Is there any tricks or anything to prevent buckle rash on the back of guitars? Does anyone make anything padded to attach to the front of your belt buckle so you can prevent buckle rash? Any info anyone?

yeah, untuck your shirt and spin the belt a bit to the side so the buckle is away from the guitar hehe.

+1 This is what I was thinking.:smokin: The Red Hot Chili Pepper's came up with a bizarre way to solve this particular problem.:laugh2:

Yes, this works. If you're right handed, locate your belt buckle towards (or even on) your left hip. It doesn't look cool and it's a little more awkward going to the bathroom, but your guitars will thank you for it. I've even worn holes in my shirts because the belt buckle was dead center, and the shirt was untucked.

Buy pants that fit. ;)

Adjusting the buckle to one side is the best option.

Trade the dinner-plate sized buckle in for a piece of rope.

Nobody ever bitches about knot-rash, do they? :)

I took the cue from Peter Tork from the Monkees- wearing the buckle on my left hip. Just start the belt one loop to the left.

Play the guitar while holding it behind your head. Hey, it worked for Jimi.

I agree with moving the buckle to the left. Though, I've got small buckles (more like loops, anyhow) and I usually wear sweaters when I play, so I shouldn't need to worry much.

If you don't want your guitar to get play wear, don't play it.

Un-tuck your shirt and use belts with plastic buckles.

Personally, I figure who really looks at the back of a guitar anyway?

Actually, a lot of "buckle rash" is often "button" rash. A simple button can cause damage, especially to a guitar made of soft wood like mahogany (Les Pauls, SGs, etc.)

A Tee or Polo is mcuh safer around your guitar than your Western shirt with the metal and pearl buttons.

I once answered an ad for a Les Paul Custom. Beautiful guitar, about two years old.

Unfortunately, the owner was a jazzer who gigged with the guitar five nights a week while wearing a tuxedo! The shirt studs wore a hole in the back of the guitar about 2" x 3" and about 1/2" deep!

And of course, French Cuffs--and those cuff studs left little 1/16" pock marks all over the face of the guitar behind the stop tailpiece. In many places, the finish had flaked off.

For such a new guitar, it truly was in horrible condition, though it played and sounded great. I couldn't get past the cosmetics though, and passed on the deal with no regrets.

Somebody makes a "thingy" (that's a high tech term) that covers the back of your guitar for just the reason you described. Check the last few pages of any guitar mag...it's probably in there.

Ah, the old "Jethro plays guitar".

If I had my mind set on using a belt buckle, I would just stick some thick shelf lining to the back of the guitar. There have also been some guitar protector/covers marketed in the past.

Is there some reason you need the belt buckle?
