Best deal IMHO for a bass compressor is the Ampeg optocomp. You can get it used for $60. Check Talkbass for deals on used compressors.

I used to use a Boss CS-3. It worked just fine. Not quite as transparent as a Keeley, but it will give whatever you're putting it into a nice clean signal and not a lot of noise.

DOn't know what your lower price range is...but

1. Go used whatever you get

2. I'll suggest these off the cuff
- EHX Bass Preacher - Lot of love in the bass world for this - that said a lot of bass players thing $200 is cheap compressor...
- TC Spectracomp - Was all there rage for a minute. Small profile, you'll want to edit on a computer.
- MXR Bass Compressor - Probably my favorite. Wanted one, but couldn't find one cheap when shopping.
