Buffing out light scratches. What do you guys use?

Things like pick swirls, light buckle rash etc.... I was thinking about getting some buffing and polishing compound, but figured I'd check here first.

I've got one that has a couple medium scratches, but it's not all the way through the clear, so I should be able to wet sand most of it out and buff back to goodness again.

I had a Meguires set once that had a polishing compound in it, and it worked great for that. I've heard that some guys just go to the auto store and buy Meguires polishing compound. I think anything like that that is not TOO abrasive would work just fine. Rubbing compound would likely be too much.

I'm sure they make a specific guitar product for this, but I don't know any of the brand names or products.

I'm glad you brought that up! I didn't even think about automotive based car polish and scratch removers. The only thing that sucks about this is, I have to go to wally world. That's almost not worth it.

Play fingerstyle, untuck and wear the guitar low. Stop em happening in the first place.

Seriously depending on the guitar you can get some good polishes that deal with this sort of thing, Dunlop do a good general one while most of the big makers (bar Fender) do ones formulated for their particular finish. Kyser do one as well but I've not used that.

Needs a professional buffer wheel ( expensive) and somekind of grit. Anything else will just make it worse.

It's a musical instrument not a piece of art.. PLAY IT and LOVE IT :sword:

Scratches add to the character and stops you being so paranoid.

I never used to gig my Anderson , I was so precious about it.. then I dinged it at home despite my care.

Now it's all I play and Im so glad I dinged it or I may never have known what an amazing instrument it really is. :wave:

My guitars light scratches usually end up getting covered up with deeper scratches.

I got over it a long time ago. Any guitar that gets used on stage, is going to end up getting beat up, no matter how hard you try.

That said, a little 3M Finesse should work like a charm.

I use the grease of freshly slaughtered virgins. Or at least my metal alter ego does.

I just use guitar polish on my guitars. I don't really pay any attention to scratches and dings.

I have used tooth polish with good results. Mixed with a little water does wonders.

The only thing that sucks about this is, I have to go to wally world. That's almost not worth it.

I avoid Walmart at all cost as well, and only go there when absolutely necessary. It literally takes 3 hours at least to go full grocery shopping there. 1/2 of the time is spent waiting in line for the 4 cashiers they have manning the registers, while 15 lanes are closed.

Unfortunately, I can shop for food there and save a significant amount over the other grocery chains here. If I was working I might be willing to spend the extra 20% and avoid it altogether, but I can't afford it for now.

We've got an Autozone and a really small Napa. I'm positive the Napa store won't have what I need. They have literally nothing but car parts and usually have to order what you need. Autozone will probably have it.

We live in a really small rural area. I almost always have to travel out of town to get anything out of the ordinary.

Stewmac's Swirl Remover.

A little pricey, but after wet sanding. rub some on and buff it off - it will be like glass!

order from stew mac - lovely stuff - tho I only really use it on my "newer" guitars
all guitars become "well loved" over time .. part of the charm
