can fine scratches be removed from plastic pickguard material? i was working on a friends PRS SE import and dropped his back spring cover... didn't see it and stepped on it... it's in one piece but there is a few fine scratches on it... can i buff it out somehow or should i save the bother and just buy a new cover... he's ok with the scratches, but i'd like to return it to perfect

scratches add character, thats why my pickguards all have them, but I'll stick around to see if theres a way to clean that stuff up.

If you have a buffing wheel it's a simple proceedure. But you need the correct buffing compound for soft plastics. You can also do it by hand using several grades of polishing paste. If you don't have any of these items, it will definitely be cheaper just to buy a new spring cover.

Simple auto cutting compund, Maquires make some good stuff..
use it with water..
cut, polish, and then hit it with a Maquires wax glaze..

it works..

I've used the stuff they sell to buff clouding out of car headlights and it seems to work pretty well on pickguards.

I haven't tried it on pickguards, but I've used Brasso (metal polish) on a cloth to buff scratches out of various types of plastic.
