Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

Hey guys,
A friend is building me a cab and I'm currently selecting speakers. I'm looking for a tight bottom end, nice and compressed, very balanced sound, which works excellent under high gain, can stay nice and clean (bell-like if you will), and the best harmonics money can buy, fat high-gain sound for riffs, excellent response to my playing

MOST IMPORTANTLY: must not mud up! I hate it when that happens

I play shred, funk, Speed Metal, Progressive Rock, Latin and Flamenco so this cab must cover a lot of ground

I was thinking

2 G12-80 Classic Lead + 2 Vintage 30
2 Vintage 30 + Eminence V12
1 G12-80 + 2 Vintage 30 + 1 Emininence V12 (or would this be too much of a mixture?

Feel free to add your own combination but please tell me why you think that ones better suited

Thanks :)

g-30 will mud out with enough gain...I would go with 2 g-12 80's and 2 g-12 25's or a full set of 80's...the g-12 100's are also very nice. you mentioned Celestions and eminence...of what you named that's what I'd do...My peersonal fave are

for crunch-low power Celestions...25's and 30's
for soild/tight bass and clean-high power Celections 80's and 100's and FANES, I love my fanes...
or EV;s I do love my ev's too

For what you are talking about I would go with either 2 G-12 80's, or 100's OR a set of Fanes in the bottom and either 25's or 30's in the top.

Good luck

You could also look into Mesa/Boogie Black Shadow 90 Celestions. They have the low end and compression of a Vinatge 30 but have a brighter tone to them. You have to buy them directly from Mesa though because they are Mesa/Boogie Boogie Stock Celestions. They are great sounding speakers.

I love vintage 30's, but like the other guy said, they can mud up at high gain settings.
Of the speakers you listed the g12-80 will retain the most definition at high gain, but I second the opinion about the EV's. They seem too clean at low gain settings, but they never break up with more volume or distortion. Therefore letting your amp sound come through 100% even with high gain.

I just did some experimenting and ended up with a mix of V30 and G12H30, they compliment each other nicely.

Eminence V12.

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

I have a Rivera cab loaded with 2x V30's and 2x GT 75's and they work great for me. It is a common combo for high gain/volume settings. And as for the V30's mudding up under gain, i find them to be so articulate under gain its not funny!
Bogner also use this combo for there urberschall cab, that thing has more gain than anything around at the moment.

This combo also works great for clean as well, just a great match for a wider frequency response in my opinion.

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

You want speakers with really high wattage rating each. 30 watters won't cut it.

Electrovoice or JBL. You'll pay for them, but they're great speakers. If you don't want to part with that much cash, go with Emminence.

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

the vintage30 is 60watts. However breaks up at 30 watts.
For that 'vintage' sound.

I am building a 2x12 and am going for a celestion black shadow 90 and a celestion vintage 30.

The v30 is 60watts and the Celestion is 90 watts.
The vintage 30 will break up more and will be driven hard to match the black shadow.
And the black shadow has a big magnet on it and has plenty of bass (no mud or boom here).
I'm keen to hear the tonal mixture for myself. lots of others swear by it.

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

I agree with Justice4all with the V30 and GT-75 mix that is a good mix and by the sounds of it will cover everything youre talking bout. I dont know much bout eminence speakers but by the descriptions on their website the M12's or V12's would be good maybe a mix of both in an X pattern would work?

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

Thanks you guys, I see a lot of mixed opinions

I have a Black Shadow 90W in my DC5 Mesa and it's pretty good, but could sound a little tighter on the low end, it's easy to get a "thin" sound out of it. It is a very articulate speaker, also very responsive, but I hate it when it sounds too thin! The cleans are particularly great, I love them!

I don't know about G12H-30s, they're supposedly good, bur are characterized as warm and vintage. I forgot to mention I want a MODERN (the caps is just to point it out) sounding cab.

I hear lots of good coming from the GT-75/V30 cross but Marshall kinda polluted my mind with their plain and IMO dull sounding 1960A/B. So I'm a little careful about these

I also heard someone holler greenbacks, the thing is I've considered these, in fact I can get this cab loaded with greenbacks for like 70% the price. It's just that I heard these are more vintage oriented and could mud up under high gain :(

A lot of people seem to be pro G12-80 so I'm defenitely looking into that, if I were to use them with V30s I'd put them cross so their characters will kind of blend and get a chunky yet responsive sound. Eminence speakers do still grab my attention so this is extremely hard to decide on :smack:

More suggestions are still welcome :)

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

I don;t think Vintage 30's really break up as easily as guys think they do! IMO, they happen to have a tone that really sounds good when the AMP breaks up. My two favorite 12" speakers would be the G12H-30 and Vintage 30 and I'd recommend a combination of two of each. I'd also experiment with the location of each in the cab and see what you feel most comfortable with. I'd try all the combinations. You could have matching speakers diagonally in the cab, or a matched pair of either in the top and the other pair in the bottem, or whatever sounds good to you. Some guys like the brighter V 30's in the bottem...away from thier ears. All depends what makes you feel like playing. Lew

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

my vintage 30's in a 2x12 don't break unless you run em really hard. And that's being pushed by a dsl100

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

I agree with Lew too. The V30 has a kinda high break up level, around 75-80% of its rated power I'd say. However, it is kinda spiky/harsh for some music/style, it doesnt have alot of bass, but it is VERY tight, but mid-heavy. Some folks like, others dont (including me).

Im not a fan of mixing speakers in a 4x12. Moreover, if you do so, which one will you mike in live situation ? You'll never know which one to choose.

Personaly, I'd go with the Classic Lead 80, next being the G12T-75, which is another good choice, kinda affordable, and can do almost *anything*.

Re: Building a 4x12 cab, recommend me 12" speakers (QUICK PLEASE)

A agree on the V30 breakup ideas here, I find the V30 to be a very effecient, very loud and tight speaker that does not break up easily. Despite it's name "vintage" IMO ot's the most modern sounding speaker in the bunch we've been discussing, especially if you're going to play metal and heavier music. Notice a lot of the big amp builders choose mostly V30's in their hi-gain monsters? (i.e Bogner Uberschall, Mesa Recto, Etc.).
