Building a speaker cabinet

I have decided to build my own 2x12 speaker cabinet. I have plenty of woodworking experience from over the years, so I'm not worried about that. What I would like to know is a good electronics brand for the speaker jack plate and maybe what kind of guages of wire to use, and anything else electronically I may be forgetting. I came to this realization after the crazy prices I've seen for stuff that is not as good as what my uncle and I have built in his cabinet shop (he has almost 17 years experience as a cabinet builder!) Can anybody point me in the right direction? Different sonic properties of woods in cabs? Maybe some good dimensions also??? Thanks!

Re: Building a speaker cabinet

I tried to make some of my own 2x12's... i started with MDF... too heavy... Then Birtch Plywood and i had touble with the finger joints and stopped.... My next plan was building a pine cab as i hear solid none knotty pine is good for cabs... Never did get around to it...

I also found out that once i bought the speaker, hardware and the covering it was sometimes cheaper to buy a premade cab...

But for my home i'd like to try making a speaker cab that is highly spray finnished like quality furnature. Something i could plug my pod thru

Solid pine cabinet without tolex; G12H30's celestions. I know what this cab sounds like and I like her.

The 18-Watt Forum for Cabs & Speakers is a good source for information. Several professional cab makers participate there, including Swanson & Reason.

+1 on Hoffman and/or Parts Express. Antique Electronic Supply and Weber are other good suppliers. You may want to search the 18-Watt or AX-84 forums for "ampwares" before placing an order. YMMV.
