Man, that purpleheart is such a great color...is it more expensive than other exotics? Is it too heavy, or hard to work with? You usually only see it in solid bodies a neck stripe or occasional fingerboard.

not as expensive as rosewood, I get planks of it and split it down to size, great to work with, wouldnt want to make a solid body out of it, then it would be heavy, can split longitudinally if you get rough with it, but a great tone..

Have you had your hands on any blackbean? One of the dudes on the aggh finished an electric with some and i think cole clark has used it. I got a bit here but it sure is heavy man. :cool2:

No not blackbean, there are a lot of the desert accacia's species that are really nice though, some lovely figure
I have a nice set of Cooba that will be a guitar one day, Hard, Hard timber , but with those lovely glassy tap tones..

Nice work as usual, Peter.

I've used purple heart on a few builds...chambered electrics. I haven't had much trouble with the purple color fading or browning, but my first time using it was only about 3 years ago. Who knows, maybe it will brown a bit, but it looks great so far. I am using it on one I'm building right now. One of these days I'll get around to posting a few pics.

Very nice soundhole rosette!!! Probably my favorite part of the guitar (though I do love everything else about it as well).

Is purpleheart generally finished, or raw? Would something like a purpleheart fingerboard make a neck too heavy?

I'm using purpleheart and maple laminated on the fingerboard of the neck I'm currently building. It doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference in weight.

yeah I have done a complete purple heart fretboard and its no heavier than ebony, prolly a little lighter.

I can't wait to see how this turns out. I could care less about Florentinism. Pointy corner vs soft corner, whatever.

The Floyd article was awesome. Awesomely funny. But seriously Pete - go listen to Night Ranger! They CAN be musical (although noted, they often are not)

Initial neck fitting,
its a Bolt On/Bolt Off neck type, as per the amazing Messrs Gore and Gilet..
I have a .9 degree neck angle to suit the 25" scale length I want to put on the guitar.
Still have to re-establish the truss rod rout, and fit the top nuts into the fretboard extension.

and fit a fretboard, inlay it, and shape the neck..

so still lots to do..

its a system developed by 2 Australian Luthiers, Trevor Gore and Gerard Gilet, they have written the most comprehensive book on acoustic guitar building and the science (including waaaay to many mathematical formulae!!) behind their approach.
Taylor guitars use a similar system for their guitar necks.
it allows future proofing of the guitar in respect of re-setting a neck angle, should that ever become necessary.
quite a few builders now use this approach some are quite interesting with adjustment screws and shims etc..

its the first time I have used this approach, and I like the flexibility of being able to fit the neck several times during the build , and it allows a few minor adjustments to be made.

end result: it allows the action of the guitar to be adjusted easily over the life of the guitar, without having to unglue a traditional dovetail joint..

Very interesting info about the neck. I also have never heard of that before, but it makes perfect sense.

got a bit busy with the Melbourne guitar show, so the building took a back seat for a while.... back to the grindstone now..

done the inlay, a feather in MOP, cos I wanted to try out my engraving.. got a new set of graves..

sort of OK for a first engraving attempt...

neck finished,
bound with purple heart, purple heart headstock plate, I manged to follow the purfling through onto the headstock
neck is maple/ebony/silky oak/purple heart, truss rod cover is onyx..

just have to frisket the bridge and then start spraying, probably next week..
