I've just replaced the BBPros on my LP Standard 2017 with a Jazz on the neck and a SH-16 (59 custom) on the bridge. It was an improvement no doubt but not that much of a difference. Better control on the highs, punchier lows. These two pups go very well together but then again I think different guitars will give different results. On my 1998 LP Standard I wouldn't trade the 490/498 for anything else. I tried them on the newer LP and they sounded very different. Unfortunately this means that the old trial and error method is the best. Oh, and pickup height makes a world of difference too. The Jazz was squealing like crazy when the pickup height was the same as the BBPro Rhythm.
