Burstbucker Pro's -- I love 'em

I recently got a Les Paul with Burstbucker Pro's in it. I have to say, I really love these pickups... to the point where my two other Les Pauls (59/C5 & Mean90/59) just sit.

Am I crazy?

I've never had pickups with mismatched coils before, maybe that's what I'm loving...

Re: Burstbucker Pro's -- I love 'em

Old PAF's did not usually have balanced coils and the result is slightly less "peaky" circuit. You are just liking the effect of two slightly different coils giving you a more "3D" tone. My Partscaster with a '59/Custom hybrid will likely be buried with me. :)

Mahogany and Alnico 5 is a good combo too.

BB Pros' coils are NOT mismatched. And the other BBs, 1,2 and 3, IF they REALLY have mismatched coils, the different is so small it wouldn't make any difference.

The differences I've measured among those coils were 0.5% max.

Having said that, you probably ARE crazy! :joke:

Re: Burstbucker Pro's -- I love 'em

It could also be the guitar, but I'm tempted to find another pair of BBPros and drop them in one of the others to see how much is guitar and how much is pickup.

They are just more open sounding. Less woofy. At times the bridge is a hair on the bright side. But definitely still meaty.

They also push the front end of amp less, which is nice at times. I'll definitely still want a different guitar that pushes more from time to time, but these are nice for what they are.

I agree with that. Some guitar/pickup combinations just work.

I had those Burstbuckers in a Les Paul and they were overly bright, couldnt wait to get them out.

i assumed the mis-match was in the wind 'pattern' of each coil?

And that's coming from someone who has a Burzum album as an avatar.

Glad you liked 'em! I hated mine with a passion. But I've never gotten along with mismatched coils. Enjoy!

I was using that guitar to play classic rock covers, not black metal. I have other guitars for playing metal.

Pepe - I won't dispute your measurements so why do Gibson say this do you think ?

" The BurstBucker™ line of pickups represents Gibson’s drive to recapture the magic of the original “Patent Applied For” humbuckers. First introduced in the early 1990s, the Gibson BurstBucker™ — Types 1, 2, and 3 — successfully captured the subtle variations of true, classic humbucker tone with historically “unmatched” bobbin windings and Alnico II magnets. No you are not crazy. They sound great, but look at what forum you are posting these results and take the answers you are getting with a grain of salt.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's -- I love 'em

I had a VMLP that I just loved the tone of. Don't know if it was the BB Pros, lack of a maple cap, lucky chunk of wood, or all of the above but I dug it. Eventually want to pick up another one but I know I won't get so lucky the second time around.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's -- I love 'em

I have a LP with Zebrawood cap that sounds great with BB Pros. I never play it however because it weighs more than I do. Besides, my Epi LP Ultra sounds so good with Mean 90/Pearly Gates that I don't need to kill my back. I'm too old for that anyway.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's -- I love 'em

Bump for old thread since I just picked up a new 2012 LP Studio Deluxe that is every bit as good as any of my standards. The uncovered bridge BB Pro is GREAT! Only complaint is the BB Pro bridge pickup is not cleaning up well. It may be the modern wiring, 500K linear pot or the BB Pro itself. I am going to try 50d wiring or a treble retention circuit. Other than this, the BB Pro in this LP is stunning in tone and feel.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's -- I love 'em

I never had a problem with mine until I started playing metal. Only then did I start to find flaws but this wasn't necessarily the pickup's fault.

I did however hate the neck pickup. The bass response was overwhelming and didn't seem to mix well with the bridge. I adjusted the height on that thing I don't know how many times. Maybe that's just my experience.

They were in a Gibson LP Standard Faded btw. I opted for a Distortion Mayhem set to replace them. If I stop playing with this band I'll probably switch them out, but probably to a Slash set. For curiosity's sake.

Might want to lower it and raise the pole pieces to balance. Should clean up just fine.
