Burstbucker Pro's

I just purchase a new Epi Lp Standard Plus. I'm thinking about burstbucker pro's. Does the SD line carry something similar? or better? I want that sound and a matched pair is appealing as well. Any suggestion? Convince me about SD pickups over Gibsons. Thanks up front for any input.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

In my opinion ANY Duncan PAF style pickup would be better than a BB Pro, I have heard some BB (1's, 2's and 3's) that i liked and in fact the BB 1/2 set that came out of my R8 were not bad pickups but the Antiquity's I put in it were far better. If you are lookingf form something "like" a BB Pro get a set of 59's...

Let me ask...what kind of tone are you shooting for?

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

I'm a 70's rocker, (Montrose, Zep, Skynyrd, Aerosmith) also electric blues, (Tab Benoit, Tinsley Ellis) Thanks.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

One more question as well. I like the look of the Chrome/Nickle covers on the LP. Will that have a positive or negative effect on tone?

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

I feel that they are better than the BB's...as for the covers they do impact the tone a very little bit...most guys say they don't even hear the difference, but I do.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

I prefer the BB's to the BB Pros

Consider the 59, APH1, Seths

These would be good alternatives to the BB Pros

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

Do you guys think that a Pearly Gates set would be to hot. I did forget to iclude ZZ top on my playlist. Very early ZZ. Love the Rev's tone then. Could I still get that classic sound? I'm pretty much in line with O's tastes.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

As long as it sounds good with your amp,

IMO PG's > BB pros

and they are still much cheaper than BB's

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

Using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Getting an awesome blues and jazz tone through my neck (import '57) which can be better with SD's, I know. import (hot humbucker) bridge sucks. Maybe I should stick with the original '59 set plan. Is the bridge '59 a little hotter than the neck?

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

I've got a set of BB Pros going up for sale soon. You're welcome to them if you want to give me enough money to buy a set of nickel covered 59s! :)

All dunca sets have a neck and a bridge with the bridge being a tad hotter but not an overwound pickup by far...just enough to have a good balence with the neck.

As for the PG's they are my fav duncan pickups (tied with the Antiquity's) the PGn is the best Duncan neck bucker IMO, some guys don't like the bridge saying that it's too bright...it is not an overly bright pickup but it does have a nice spike in the upper mids that really make it sing and allows it to cut through in a bad setting.

Thanks for the offer, however the friendly, knowledgable folks here have helped my decide on either some PG's or '59's. I too, need to come up with some cash for the purchase! Too many purchases lately.

LOL! Actually, I was more so giving you an opinion on the BBPros than trying to sell them....but no problem none the less.

I suspect that the only way I'm going to get what I need for these things, is I'm going to have to pimp them out on ebay....

I'm a little thick sometimes. :) I was listening in on the tone chart. Not much help . They kind of sound the same. I'd probably be happy with 59's or PG's.

Re: Burstbucker Pro's

Huge difference between the PG's and 59's, IMHO.

You mentioned the Rev. Gibbons, if I'm not mistaken.

The PG set was modeled after the pickups in that same LP that was all over the early ZZ Top albums.

Yeah, I play more of that style than anything. Getting by with what I have, just want a more real tone for that stuff and some more traditional 70's radio tunes with that smooth sounding distortion. I guess maybe I was afraid to go for the plunge with the PG's. I've been hearing too much negative about the PGb. Hearing that the neck is awesome though. Would a PGn pair with a "59b? I don't like the JB. Used it on my Schecter C-1+ and couldn't tame it. However, I loved the Neck Jazz. It was smoothe. I am having fun with the Import '57 neck that is stock on my epi lp. It's on the muddy side though. Can't stand the so called Hot Humbucker import bridge. Too much like the JB. Think Collective Soul's "Better Now" for the bridge. That's what I want. I can get early Gibbon's on the neck with a little bridge blended. I can even get early Robin Trower thru my neck as is. Sorry for the story. I'm not that familiar with the numerous choices. It'll drive you crazy!
