Busted a nut!

Re: Busted a nut!

I've also made slots using welding torch tip cleaners. A little more practice on my part would have made a more optimal nut though. You still need practice with the files. Back in the dark ages, I made several with needle files.

These days I'm older, maybe not wiser but definitely more picky.

Just by the sound of things its a job easily and probably best fixed with a minimal amount of super glue. Don't breath the vapors - some people call it stupor glue for good reason! :D

Re: Busted a nut!

Every time I'm replacing a plastic nut with a graphtech nut, I drop the graphtech nut on my worktable just to hear the lovely glassy/crystalline kinda ringing sound it makes. It's absolutely beautiful. Love that sound dearly. In comparison, plastic nuts sound like a cheap, plinky, dead slapping sound.

Re: Busted a nut!

Understand, of course - that some folks have brass nuts….

Heard that Chuck Berry was in that group, when he recorded that song ‘My dang-a-ling!"

Re: Busted a nut!

Again dudes - focus. We are not doing an Uber-tone experiment here.

The Guitar is $60 Dean Vendetta B goods. The Orange under construction one. It has a Blackout in it. Usually played on the Recto setting on the amp.

Custom fit? Rollers? Graphtech? Get real.

Re: Busted a nut!

whaddya mean get real.. A graphtech nut is like 10-15 bucks. Not a huge expenditure, and it'll help maximize the tonal potential of your guitar.

Re: Busted a nut!

I've got a 6116 Tusq - If its close to fitting, I'll send it to you gratis, Aceman. I got no use for it.

Re: Busted a nut!

Graphtech or none. I've replaced all the nuts and saddles on my guitars with Graphtechs, and they play even better now than they did when I got them.

Re: Busted a nut!

Really???? Cool.

on the one I got
the break angle of the strings is three millimeters farther back
than the original

you will have to remove a bit of fret board to scootch it forward
remove strings

mark the end of fret board minus 3 mm

I used a hack saw, for the line
then a chisel to chunk it out
followed by a file to level it
check height often

Re: Busted a nut!

Graphite and ivory nuts break the most in my experience. I don't like working with graphite nut material either.

Your best bet at DIY is to get bone blank or corian blank. Corian is much easier to work with and blanks can be easily made from kitchen countertop sample blocks.
Bone needs to be prepared, it is harder to work with but gives you the most pride :)

As I have said numerous times before, the cheapest nut file is a string of desired gauge and valve lapping compound. Cuts as fast as nut files do.

Re: Busted a nut!

I like that idea - Actually you can control cutting speed by the grit of the compound. IIRC, Clover makes compunds up to 600 grit.

Take it from someone who did 1 stroke too many. :D
