Bustin' the Bronco: upgrading the pickup in my Squire Bronco

Re: Bustin' the Bronco: upgrading the pickup in my Squire Bronco

^ YES! Though I cannot get my bridge to remove itself from the body.

Oh, I have no intention of making this bass pretty in the least; it's a work horse, and shall be treated accordingly. It has a new pickup, and now has to just shut up and get on with the job! :)

Even workhorses can be beautiful animals. Black on black will look pretty sharp -- and it might even be more workhorsey in some musical circles.

But then you wouldn't be able to see the MST3K decal! =p

Try using heat. Do you have a hair dryer? 10 or 15 minutes on high might loosen it up. If you don't have one, maybe get a small tin can (like for mushrooms or mandarin oranges, or Red Bull), cut the top off and set it on the bridge, then boil some water and pour it in the can and let it sit for a while.

Ah, cool; thanks for the tip, I will try that. With a wife and 2 daughters in the house, I have plenty of hair dryers!

Let us know how it goes.

Is your plan to replace the bridge? (I certainly would.) If so, what do you plan on putting back on there?

Re: Bustin' the Bronco: upgrading the pickup in my Squire Bronco

Yeah, besides the pickup, the bridge really needs to go. I have the intonation as good as I can get it, but I really need 4 separate saddles to get it where I would like. I know nothing about bass, so I am not sure; probably just a Gotoh; once again, I don't want to outstrip the value of the bass in parts, just get it record-worthy (which it is now, quite frankly).

Re: Bustin' the Bronco: upgrading the pickup in my Squire Bronco

The pickup cavity looks generous enough to accept an EMG-35-P4 or a Blackouts For Bass AS-BO-4 humbucker plus an active EQ wiring harness. Just enlarge the pickup hole in the scratchplate to a rectangle.

I could also imagine a Dimarzio Model One or Will Power N pickup dropping straight in. The lip of these EB style pickups would disguise some of the scratchplate mod mess.

The cavity is smaller than the photos make it out to be.
