Re: Buying a Fender amp soley for the overdrive sounds?
Fenders can have a good distortion but it is rather "Fender-y". RAT, OCD, and Fuzz Face's sound kinda nice thru them if you ask me.
If you like the Fender flavor in distortion consider also the Mesa Lone Star, Mark I, and several other models out there that have that flavor but succeed in getting high gain tube saturation as well.
Oh totally! The blonde Bandmaster with an EQ for boosts, RAT for dirt and a fuzz for all out blitzkreig is just freakin' amazing if you're into that kinda thing.

Those CTS alnicos and C10R's in Supers have a service life of about 5 minutes when you dime that amp---esp with anything beefier than a Tele or Strat. Been there, done that...

Re: Buying a Fender amp soley for the overdrive sounds?
Those light duty stock speakers in Supers really don't like distortion or a lot of mids---the last gig I did with Supers (2 of them), I blew 6 out of 8 with a 335. If you went with C10Q's or at least 25 watt power handling per speaker, it would probably hold up. Can't say that I really appreciate the stand alone 'overdriven' sound of a big BF amp sans pedals though...blondes, browns or tweeds for me.
One of the best quotes ive ever heard from you, drew! Very true, some people want big $$$$ dollar amps then expect to play them at bedroom volume and be satisfied. Jam out with some friends or put something together where you could actually play at performance level and enjoy your amp damnit!

while i think tweeds are great for dirt, i think you can make most of the bf/sf amps work nicely foroverdrive. a deluxe, bandmaster, or bassman can rock when setup right
