Re: Buying a guitar online
1) Know what you're buying. If it's a line of guitars that are having a lot of QC issues, expect them. Schecter is usually pretty good, I haven't had any issues with the two I've owned. 2) Check to see what the return policy is. Most big retailers will cover return shipping. Individual sellers or mom n' pop shops will make you pay return shipping. 3) Retailers will ship their guitars properly for the most part. Your local (UPS or Fed Ex) distribution hub will more than likely be the culprit for damaged goods. Request your guitar to be shipped by the carrier least likely to damage it. If you're buying from an individual, request for the guitar to be shipped drop tuned 3-4 steps. Especially, set neck guitars. Ask for packing inside the case.
Despite living in LA and having tons of shops to pick from, I've found all my killers deals online. If I'm saving hundreds by buying sight unseen, I'm willing to take a chance. All my Gibsons have been purchased online and sight unseen. Fortunately, Custom Shop Gibsons are fairly consistent guitars that play great. Out of the 8 vintage guitars I've had, only one was a dud (knock on wood).
