Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

Andrew Lamprecht

Minion of One
I am on the verge of buying a G&L ASAT Tribute and I was wondering if there are any other better deals out there before I go and buy one. A store about an hour away has 8 ASAT Tributes in different colors and pickup combos.

I'm thinking I want to go traditional tele but with more beef so if I get another tele I would put a JD/? in it but if I got the G&Ls I would be happy with the MFD Pickups. So that's a small win right there....

Any objections/comments? I am willing to spend around $600.

These are the two ASATs I am the most interested in.

They have one of each in stock as of this morning.

And people are already telling me to not buy a guitar, enjoy poland, etc. Or just buy a crap guitar to mess with. I'm gonna be there for a year. I can't go a year without a decent set up. I'll probably end up picking up an AC15 while I'm there and sell it before I go. (Also, I've wanted a tele for a while now and this is a good excuse.... :D )

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

those G&L tele pickups are pretty powerful. You may not need to upgrade at all.

I know, I really liked the mfd tele size pups. I meant i was going to change them if someone said the highway one is a better deal or whatever.

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

G&L make great guitars, don't change anything until you've played it for a while. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how good it is.

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

if you have access to 8 of them I'm sure one will speak to you.

If not, don't push it, go find some highway 1's and give em a go

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

A better deal may be an actual-USA G&L on the used market. Other than that option, I think those Tribute guitars for $600 are a good way to go.

$600 buys you a slightly used USA G&L or Fender.

I would buy new only if one just knocks you socks off when you play it.

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

I really love those G&L's. Problem is I just can't justify buying another Tele. I've got one American Standard, two Korean, and one Mexican. The only advice I would give is not to spend extra money to get an American model. They are all really nice and all about the same.

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

Between those two the first one speaks to me the most but like a few already said, go play as many as you like and choose the one that moves you.

Read That90'sGuy's quote in my sig, best advice ever given IMO...

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

I played Teles in the same price range for a couple of weeks around Boulder/Denver, and came away with the Tribute ASAT Special. Even though they're made in Korea, the bridges and pickups are USA made, and they sound killer.

G&L are excellent axes you can't go wrong, now I like them both, but I really the darker wood. Just because it's a different look.

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

To whom, exactly? Fender does it...

Doesn't surprise Look, the Great Roy B. rocked a Brazillian Rosewood Tele with Ash Body. Of course, it as Epic, but in my estinmation, Roys tone from what Ive heard was always razor edge bright anyway, with hos fender amps and clean/crunch style .
Traditional thinking is 60's Alder with Rosewood boards are great Teles, yet nearly everyone reveres the blackgaurds with thier Ash/ Maple as being so much more epic.
If you go deep on Tele discussions on the net, you'll see that the Ash / Rosewood Tele is beyond just dubious mix; its downright abhorrent to many many in the know.
Its just something that shouldnt happen.
I happen to agree. So sue me.
If you go on TDPRI, with theor prevalnet anything goes attitudes and their slant towards the modern as oposed to the classic, youll soon get hoards..legions even, of guys teeling you how great Ash/Rosewood is. I strongly disagree.

You're really something ya know that...

Loads of great sounding ash Tele's with RW boards....whats even more important that that to me regarding your post is I'd bet any amount of cold hard cash you can't hear the difference between an ash/maple Tele, an alder/RW Tele or even a basswood tele with whatever kind of neck on it...

Thats not fair man. Theres a huge difference. . You shoudl know that. Baaswood? ;Getaway with that crapwood...maybe good for high gain, but little else.
The difference between Maple/ Rosewood becomes supremely apparent, not with a regular guitar so much , but with an old vintage Strat. Monumental difference. The Rosewood assumes a soft round shape like Dires Straights Sultans of Swing".
The Maple has a Fast Attack, big presence, and a long sustain , Very bright and crunchy but not as much ambient texture, and rich decay as Rosewood .
Granted I am basing my limited experience with Strats, not Teles, but the fundamental would be the same.
I almost want to justify your interest in my posts, by telling you something Like I am privy to one of the worlds most important vintage guitar and amplifier collections, but unfortunately I cannot do so.

Wow...

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

Go and play a bunch and see which one follows you home. THere's a huge amount of internet advice but your ears and fingers will always know what's best for you. Take your amp with you if you can.

Re: Buying a guitar tomorrow... maybe... help.

What guitar did Knopfler play the solo on Sultans of Swing? if it was a Maple board, then i conceed your point.

EDIT- oh hell. Never minfd . TGWIF s right. Knppfer IS playing a Maple board on the Sulatns of Swing video, and thats JUST the tone the Roswood 64 Strat got, so, yeah, TGWIF must be right. I was wrong casue the Mople board 57 didnt' sound anything like Sultans of Swing. My bad, i just generalized.;
