buying on Ebay or buying New?

I am thinking about buying the peavey XXL head and they go for about $400 on Ebay plus about $50 shipping and they go for about $600 new which is about a $150 difference. So is it better to buy it on Ebay or New?

I saw, save yourself some money and get it on eBay, but make sure it is from a buyer who has good feedback and has a return policy that works for you.

I personally don't like to buy used guitar gear unless I absolutley have to. The truth is you don't know what type of person had it before you. Some people don't sweat leaving their gear in their car trunk for a few hours on a 95 degree summer day. Basically my point it is that you don't know if the previous owner or owners took care of the gear or not. I'd say save the extra $150.00, and buy a new one. It's such a much better feeling knowing that it will be coming straight out of the box when you get it and you won't have the thought of "did the person before me take care of it or abuse it?" popping up in your head. It just won't be an issue if its brand new. :32: I have O.C.D. so maybe most of you don't think or feel how I do about this issue........ :blackeye:

Re: buying on Ebay or buying New?

It all depends how much of a difference there is. I got a great deal on my Grosh and if it wasn't used, it would have been A LOT more expensive new. I bought it from a guy who has sold top end gear on eBay before, had a wonderful record, and someone who was easy to work with.

People are people. If you buy from someone who has a bad feedback record, has sold junk in the past; odds are they won't give you what they're advertising. It's all about reputation on the net, that's no matter whether it's eBay or on forums etc. Look at Krank amplification, they got caught posting feedback to counteract bad feedback on their amps and now I'm sure there business is hurting from it. Who wants to trust people like that?

If you have questions about an item, ask. I guarantee it will make a world of difference and it shows the seller that you're interested in the item.

Re: buying on Ebay or buying New?

I can't bring myself to buy anything brand new, unless it's something I absolutely can't find on the used market. Retail plus tax is a killer, so I'd rather make some other guy's loss my gain. Of course, I wanna see crystal clear pics, plus I drill the guy with a bunch of detailed questions till I'm confident that its in 90% + condition.
With guitars, I look first at the 2nd fret G string, since that's the telltale sign of how much it's been played. With amps, I just go by it's appearance, turn the knobs to make sure the pots aren't oxidized, and see how much dust is on the chassis.
This tells me what kind of owner used it. With the savings, I retube it with the best tubes, and most likely it'll sound better than new. No warrantee means I better be getting an awesome deal, tho.

I am very impatient so I would probably get it off Ebay before I saved up $150 more but it would be better to get it new.

New off the floor at Guitar Center scares the hell out of me. Even with their return policy, I don't want it off the floor. If you pay new price make sure it's new in the box. Most internet retailers will give you free shipping and no sales tax and new in the box. For a $150 savings, I'd rather have it new. Oh, and you get the warranty.
