Buzzing pickup springs

The springs that are on the screw that adjusts the height of my neck pickup buzz alot, any advice on how to combat this?

Re: Buzzing pickup springs

Leo Fender, cured that problem years ago by using surgical tubing instead of springs. The rubber tubing won't/can't rattle. I think some parts suppliers may sell the tubing. Any good guitar shop should be able to help you too.

yeah, Stew Mac sells it

if there's a medical supply place you know of, you could probably get some there too ... you'll want to match the inner diameter of the tubing with the adjusting screws if you do that

sometimes you need to check the length of tubing, so that you can adjust the pickup height correctly - usually they should be about 1/4" -3/8" or so

Re: Buzzing pickup springs

the tube is the best to use but if you want a quick cheap fix just stretch the springs out a bit so they are longer and stay tight against the pickup and ring or pickguard.

Humbucker or single coil?

If SC, just get the tubing. Stew-Mac has it and it's very cheap for the hassle it will save you, both in not causing noise and they're great when changing pickups.

If Humbucking, the stretching thing should work just fine.

Couldn't it be that they are just too short? May be they aren't tensioned enought and they are free to rattle. Try to put something in the baseplate on the screw hole that elevates the surface were the spring rests. Anything cilindrycal should work since the screw still will have to go throught it.

This is what I did when I found out my sprigns were just too short. I took a 4 conductor computer cable and I removed two pieces of the exterior plastic isolation of 1/8'' lenth. The plastic isolation it is very resistan to compresion to it holds the spring pressure quite well. Then I've put each of the cylinders in the screw hole so the screw could go throught it and the spring had to rest over it.

Re: Buzzing pickup springs

I'll try all these suggestions.

They are humbuckers. I'm curious why Farkus would only suggest the tubing for single coils.
