Bwahahahaha!!! I'm an evil genius ... I think

I think I have invented the coolest dual hum wiring in the universe. It requires a superswitch unfortunately, but you gotta do what you gotta do, as they say.

Here's a diagram:

Please forgive the sloppiness. The grey wire is meant to represent SD's white wire.

All positions are hum cancelling, except of course when the spin-a-split is used. The only thing I would add is seperate volume and tone for each pickup, but I ran out of knobs :)

Now, it's been a long time since I took electronics class in high school, so I would like to know from the wiring experts: will this work?

Thanks!

Nevermind . . . mis-saw something. :smack:

I'll keep looking.

Edit: Looks good so far. ;) Cool idea.

Really? I'm not seeing how that would happen.

I should also point out that the red and grey wires are not connected at the point on the diagram where they cross.

Because I was dead wrong. Post editted. :blackeye:

ur the ted kyzinski of p-up diagrams.

i must be stupid, but what's so cool about this?

Well, I think it's cool because it's very versatile, but also quite simple. Instead of the usual three positions, you get five hum cancelling positions from just one switch. The spin-a-split knobs are there too if you want some single coil tones, or want to tweak the humbuckers a bit. If you want the "classic" two humbucker wiring, you've got that too.

I think its a great idea, but I'll probably look it over closer tomorrow. I'm in my Sunday evening "mellow" mode at the moment. Too much thinking. :)

And we care about this why? I mean kudos on the technicals, but why do I want to do this. Help! What am I missing? Is this that different than an Ibanez inner/outer position?

I'm not too familiar with Ibanez wiring, but if it's anything like PRS wiring, then my scheme has one big advantage: you don't have to flip any magnets to get hum cancelling in all 5 positions. In positions 2 and 4, the circuit still behaves like a humbucker, but it's as though the pickups are "trading" coils. I am looking forward to hearing what that sounds like. Also, you get the spin-a-split on both pickups, which throws in a ton of versatility.

It's not for everyone - I'll grant you that. A Superswitch won't fit in a lot of dual hum guitars. I wonder if you could use a 5-way rotary switch to accomplish the same thing. Anyone know?

Re: Bwahahahaha!!! I'm an evil genius ... I think

Isn't the other difference that most guitars that split both pups hook them in parallel, while yours will be in series? Like a 4"-wide humbucker? (Or, would that be 4" long?)

Yes, exactly. In pos. 2 and 4, the coils are wired in series, as though they are part of the same pickup. Pos. 3 is just like a Les Paul middle position though, with both full buckers in parallel with each other.

Re: Bwahahahaha!!! I'm an evil genius ... I think

Thats what I thought. Cool. ;)

I'll still look this over tomorrow. I think there might be a better way to do it, but yours is still good.

Re: Bwahahahaha!!! I'm an evil genius ... I think

The 5 position 4 pole rotarys are exactly equivalent to the superswitch.
The 6 position 4 pole rotaries go one higher!

Re: Bwahahahaha!!! I'm an evil genius ... I think

I like it, and would do something similar on my les paul, except i cant put a superswitch on it!:smack: 2 spin a splits will have to do me

Re: Bwahahahaha!!! I'm an evil genius ... I think

How would you do this without the spin a split knobs? I mean that would be great to have them, but on a Les Paul you'd have to drill more holes for the extra tone and Volume knobs unless you wanted to only have 2 knobs for tone and volume...
