byo guitar kits?

Re: byo guitar kits?

Looks pretty cool, but haven't tried one. Been working on a partscaster myself... a little bit of a pain looking for everything separately, but you can find some great deals on the parts you want if you're patient. :dunno:

Re: byo guitar kits?

Well, a cautionary tale.

Got 2 kits....a 59 LP and a Jag. These were the premium level ones....no hardware just wood and 3x the price of your linked item.

The Jag - bought some authentic fender parts for it. The routs for the bridge didn't fit a fender Jag bridge. The routs for the switch plates were too small to fit the plates with the switches on and the holes drilled wouldn't fit the qty of wires that a stock jag requires.

The LP - the neck heel fit onto the body was so poor I would have needed builders bog. To make the fit work the neck moved so far in the neck pickup cavity had to be re-routed. After contacting them about the gap, I was told it was normal and just lacked 'finish sanding'

Stay well clear IMO.

The upside was that I now build from scratch. Even my worst stuffup guitars surpass the BYO Guitar debacle I had.

Re: byo guitar kits?

Didn't you just got that sweet Soltero? My honeymoon periods last a good bit longer (granted it's more of a return than a completely new and exciting one but still...).

In any case, From these photos, I'm not sure this heel design fills me with confidence.

Re: byo guitar kits?

LOL!! Yes bro, I did. And I love the Dean!!! Been playing the poop outta it. And, of course, I need another guitar like I need more children... BUT.... My GAS keeps reminding me that there is no V in the stable... No money, and definitely, no rush.. but just looking into inexpensive ways to satisfy the GAS...

ALEXR, Thanks for the heads up!! If I had the woodworking tools and all that appears I would need to fix a bad kit, Id just build my own from scratch.. So, def don't want to waste money and effort..

Re: byo guitar kits?

Rand-o, Yeah, Dean would be a good route to take, I just don't prefer the headstock.. Esp on a V. Double V .. Although, I REALLY liked the V I once had, but they haven't made that model in a few years.. It was like the Rik Emmett, but affordable. White, black binding, single bucker..

Re: byo guitar kits?

I have put quite a few together over the years and given them away to students at school. It is a good experience, but don't expect anything spectacular when you are done. The more expensive kits from companies like Carvin are a different story, and you can end up with a good instrument with one of those. I played on of their strat-kit guitars for years.
