C-5 pup

I tried first the C5 in a Gibson M III set neck and it was boomy on the basses and to mellow on the highs , then i changed the regular screws for allen head screws and it improved it a lot : tighter basses and more agressive highs , you can try that it is simple and effective .
But man a few weeks ago i put this p-u in an Ibanez roadstar with basswood body and flamed top , very bright guitar and full of mids , and this C5 was screaming so much that i had to put back the regular screws , and it has still more bite that it had in the Gibson .
Morality : listen to you guitar and choose a pickup witch doesn't have the same EQ than your guitar .
In the gibson now it is a TB6 , the only way to cure the excessive bass and the lack of brigthness of this guitar .
Hope this help .

I have a nickel covered C5 right now but I just ordered a nickel covered tb6. I have a Gibson classic goldtop. Should I expect the tb6 to sound better? I have a 500k pot in it and the tone was disconnected but I am thinking of connecting it to get rid of some highs. Should I get better caps? If so what brand and rating to get more mids or less highs? Should I go with a 500k pot and a low # cap or a 300k pot with a high# cap?
Will having the nickel cover help or hurt the gain or character of a PUP?
I like the gain of the c5 but it needs more mids and the tb6 may be a little too hot and shrill. My c5 sounds thin compared to my friends same exact guitar with a stock Gibson 500t in it. Will the tb6 sound closer to the 500t or the C5? Thanks

That's interesting what you said about the allen screws. Was that easy to change? And where did you get the extra screws from?
you just ...unscrew the screws ! i had a dimarzio Humbucker from Hell witch provide me 12 nice allen srews or you can also try Duncan black allen srews; for exemple in a Demon i tried to exchange the row of allen with the row of slotted screws , but the allen being closer to the bridge made the p-u screaming with squeeling hights , it makes a lot of difference .

Re: C-5 pup

Klinkdtroit , i am surprised that the C5 sound thin in a Lespaul , but perhaps this guitar as the same problem my Gibson M III has : the same EQ than the C5 : big basses , broaded mids and mellow treebles ?
In this case if you can try to put allen screws it will tightned the basses , make the high more agressive and your mids won't be sunk in bass mud .
The C5 doesn't lack mids but be carefull in what guitar you put it .
Otherwise the TB6 is always good especially in a fat gibson , but the C5 as more string definition .
If you can't do it with the C5 it means that your guitar is not made for it .

Re: C-5 pup

I used a C5 for about a year. I thought it sounded thin in my "Les Paul" too. Though it wasn't really a Les Paul...I tried my C5 in a couple of my double cutaway Hamer Studio Customs. Just not enough mids for me. The JB was the "best" bridge pickup for those guitars, IMO. Lew

If the C-5 is too thin, the Custom, JB, or even the Rio BBQ may be the ticket.

It's not really thin...though thin in the mids sort of describes it. It's really that the C5 needs a touch more midrange in some guitars and I wonder if that's why Seymour didn't release that pickup until guys on this board started putting an a5 magnet in the Custom or Custom Custom and liking it.

Seymour undoubtably had tried the same thing years ago but didn't put that a5 version of the custom out on the market until guys here started making them for themselves out of a Custom or Custom Custom.

My experience with the C5 is that it sounds great when played loudly and sometimes a little thin in the midrange when played quietly.

I agree Lew and kind of think the Custom is a little better because it addresses the midrange issue you mentioned. To me the Custom is warmer than people give credit. People should ignore the ceramic magnet as Bill Lawrence would say and instead focus on the over all characteristics of the pickup. The Custom seems very balanced and full to my ears and thicker than the C-5. I still find the Custom good on clean as well. The Jb might have a slightly better lead voice than the Custom but the Custom I feel is the better over all pickup and does well for many styles new and old.

The Rio BBQ was my answer for a while but I find the Custom a touch tighter and has more cut in the higher ranges.

I remember Anderson sending me an email saying his Anderson H2+, etx would be a better bet since they have such fat bass and a thicker tone.

Hmm I converted my CC into a C5....it went all VH/classic rock on me, in my ears it just balanced more out...that may be seen as thin to some??
It was like a slight oversized PAF to me, I love both versions.
