C-Rex Break in question.

I bought a Eminence C-rex awhile back for a 60watt 1x12 combo I was repairing. I have had the speaker and played it moderatly for about 9 months. My question is, how long do these really take to break in and do they get warmer/smoother once broken in? Mine seem's to be getting brighter and spiky. Is this normal? I have tried it now in 4 different amps and get the same brightness and spiky mids. Thanks for any input you can give.

welcome to the forum!

had to say but hemp breaks in alot slower than paper. i go thru a bunch of silliness breaking in my speakers. running low frequencies thru it for a few hours at low volume, then a little more volume. then more volume but full frequency sounds. i usually blow sound thru it from morning to night before i put it in my amp. mine isnt bright or spikey and ive had two of them. have you tried the amp with different speakers?

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

Thanks Jeremy. Yeah, it's not the amp/amps. It sounds great with several other speakers (Emi RWB, Celestion v30, etc). I'll keep playing it, it is definitly still stiff sounding, so maybe that will help. I heard that these were darker sounding speakers, but this is sounding more on the bright side. Should I expect it to darken in tone once it breaks in more? Thanks again.

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

my understanding is that it is not a dark speaker.

here's Emi's description:
"Clean and full, with lots of body and sparkle. Smokey smooth with high-end definition"

I don't read "dark" into that, and "sparkle" and "high-end definition" suggest some brightness. In addition, it's pretty efficient at 102.

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

its not that bright, it has a strong top end but not that bright. i wouldnt use sparkle to describe it at all i also wouldnt really call it dark. the lil buddy from eminence is dark. the rex is fairly balanced to my ears

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

Cool, thanks. I don't mind it being a little bright, sparkly, etc. I just don't like the spikey mids/highs and stiffness. I'm guessing it needs a lot more breaking in. That's my excuse for playing loud and I'm sticking with it. :biglaugh:

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

i run my deluxe reverb on 4-6 fairly regularly which is plenty loud, but boy is it fun

I go through a similar procedure when breaking in a speaker... a few hours on the AC transformer, at about 1/3 power rating, then mount in the cabinet, play a bit, and when I'm not playing I run rock music through it (when I get the chance -- usually have to wait for times when everyone's out of the house).

I'm breaking in a Red Fang and a Private Jack now, waiting for the Lopo cabinet to arrive.

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

I have a couple of the C-Rex's. I do not see it as spiky at all. The V30 is mid-spikey sounding to me often. Maybe that is what is working for you with that amp. They take a while to loosen up.

Note it is rated as a 50w speaker. So you could kill it with a 60w amp if you push it much.

I'm just going to work it for a month or so, and if it still doesn't do it, I'll probably sell/trade it. No worry's about blowing it, it's currently in a 2x12 config in a 80 watt amp, matched with a RWB. We will see how it does. Thanks everyone.

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

Nope, not out of phase. I am actually liking it matched with the RWB, which is a bit warmer in the highs. Before I had it in a few different amps and cab running 1x12, and didn't care for it as much alone. I can see where it would sound great in a deluxe though, once it loosens up a bit.

Re: C-Rex Break in question.

Just figured I post a quick update. I have been playing the amp with the C-Rex everyday exclusivly for the last 5 days 2-4 hrs a day. This is after using it on and off for over 6 months, it's finally starting to loosen up a bit. It still may have a little to much grit for me, but I'm going to keep working it in. When you guys say it takes a Long time to break in, you meant a LOOOONNGGG! time, LOL!

Overall, I think I dig the RWB a little more and will probably pick up another soon. A little darker/smoother, with a little less grit.
