C8 in My Les Paul Classic

I finally gave it a try. I had an old, 1980s era Duncan Custom (DCJ on the little white sticker) that I converted to a Custom 8 last night. Interesting construction during that era - both the individual coils were taped as well as tape around the final assembly. I put this in the bridge of a Les Paul Classic.

It's LOUD!!!

It's hot! Probably too hot. Lots of highs, maybe too much high end. I have a Stellartone ToneStyler on this guitar, and I have to turn the knob about halfway down to get the right sound. However, with the ToneStyler all the way down, I have the perfect Jimmy Page "While Lotta Love" sound.

So I think I have come to a conclusion with this guitar: I want it hotter than the Fralin 9k/8k combination that was in there before, but not the output of a Custom 8. It's just too much. Since the guitar is pretty bright to begin with, I'm going to order a Custom Custom and a Pearly Gates neck set for this guitar. It's a cherry sunburst, so a pair of zebras should be the way to go.

Thank you. Feel free to comment.

Re: C8 in My Les Paul Classic

What you need to do is put an UOA5 in your C8. More warmth, more dymanics, more vintage feel, less output. I have one in a LP and it's great.

Re: C8 in My Les Paul Classic

I have a GFS Vintage 59 pup in my Epi LP, am going to try a UOA5 and see how it does, the speakers in my cab are the Eminence Texas Heats and they have a more aggressive bass response so the regular A5 comes out more bassy than I like, will see how the UOA5 does, can`t really afford new speakers so may mod the tone stack to get rid of some of the bass response. Looking forward to trying the new mag.
