Cab Dilema

So, I have a Marshall 1999 JCM900 1960A 4X12, all stock, never been opened. When I was trying out my AOR from the guy I bought it sounded amazingt through some "homemade" 2X12s, its still kicks ass with this marshall but something is lacking ... I can put birchwood in the back instead of current plywood, play with V30s or others, thicken the "plumbing" ... or I can sell it, add a little extra cash on top and possibly get something that will work with out mods???
Tones I am into:
Rammstein, Nightwish, EdGuy, Startovarious, Uli Roth, Lynch, Blackmore, modern Tony Iommi. Thanks guys .....

I doubt Putting a Birch back on would make any difference. In that case your better off selling the Marshall a buying a totally Birch constructed cab. A speaker swap sounds the most logical thing to try at this point. What speakers come stock in the Marshall you own?

JCM900 4X12 are loaded G12T75 Celestion 75W speakers ....

I replaced the G12T75's in my Jubilee 4x12 years a go, and never looked back. One of the best moves I ever made for overdriven tone. It was a night and day improvement.

I used all V30's, but many find that even just replacing 2 of the 75's with 2 V30's works wonders. Another awesome combonation is two G12H30's and two V30's. That's what I'd reccomend.

Another good thing is some form of beam blockers, covering up the center of the cones at the grill cloth. I just used some thick acoustical foam chunks matching, more or less the circumfrence of the dust covers, glued to the inside of the grill cloth.

I put acoustical insulation, in intermitant squares, on the back plate, and in the corners. This cut's down on standing waves, but still allows the cab to resonate well.

So I guees you think its a good cab after all and with these mods above it would get me closer to Rammstein, Nightwish, EdGuy, Startovarious, Uli Roth, Lynch, Blackmore, modern Tony Iommi, typa' tones .... I read a lot on this and other forums that these 75s basically suck, are they that cheap that Marshall just can't resist but putting them in? But, going back to my original post, say I sell this one for, I don' know 450-500 and than throw another 150-200 on top is there something out there that will get me to that tone-zone I've described with out the rectum discomfort of mods???

Well, I'd try swapping speakers before a new cab. Then if you still don't like it, sell the cab and get something else. You could Ebay the 75's to partially offset the cost of different speakers. A lot of hair metal guys and scooped to death metal guys seem to love em.

Then agian, if your sure that your not going to like it no matter, then you might be better off to just move on to a different cab.

On edit: The V30 is much much better for that type of playing than the 75, IMHO.

I don't know the going rate on used 75's. It won't be near equal to the cost of new speakers, unfortunately.

I guess you will have to evaluate the net costs vs just dumping the 75 loaded 4x12 and replacing it with different cab.
