Cab for a 5150

After 8 months of searching.. I finally picked up a new amp off ebay; a 5150 II head. Now.... I need a cab for it. What would you guys suggest? I was thinking an Avatar 2x12.. but I'm really not familiar with the properties of different speakers and such. I've also heard that 4x12's tend to sound better. Also, I don't wanna go TOO expensive here... like no more than 350-400 TOPS. I know that's not much..

Re: Cab for a 5150

if you're doing the scooped mid thing

eminence swamp thangs or legend 125's, seriously, IMO you will NOT find a better scooped mid sound

Re: Cab for a 5150

Peavey Triple X 412 quad as a bass set up and change speakers to suit, the good Ol' Celestion Greenback's are a retro dream but always check EVERYTHING as the most/more obscure something is might just be YOUR tone.
My rig is bizarre to the max but I get great tone; solid state amp circa 1980, Parts-O-Caster loaded with the same vintage SD's and Old Boss stomp boxes with a few select upgrades. Then again Tony Joe White gets his "tone" through a '65 Sunburst Strat neck PU and his technique, what you play is what you get.

Re: Cab for a 5150

I prefer Marshall cabs with 5150's, or a Mesa 4x12 Traditional size.

Re: Cab for a 5150

IMO the Peavey 5150 Enclosures complement the nuances of the head better than any other cabinet, especially the low end (particularly important for heavy users of the "resonance" control) ;)

Re: Cab for a 5150

The 5150 cabs are, imo, some of the best cabs for metal out there. That's why you always see people using them with XXXs too.

Re: Cab for a 5150

you should be able to find a 5150 cab on ebay for around that price if you're patient!?

Re: Cab for a 5150

I used to work for a dealer and I AB'd a 5150 cab with a Classic 412. Classic winds hands down. It gave the amp a more aggressive tone and snarl that was just amazing to my ears. It also trimmed off some of the annoying chrilly (is that a word?) top of the 5150II.

Re: Cab for a 5150

I have an early original 5150 head and cab..... Love the balls of the 5150 cab!!!!! Saddly it is a bit too big for me at most gigs so i have been using that 5150 head thru a little 1x12 Marshall cab... model 1912 i think... It is 8ohms and has 150 watt speaker in it and it takes most of what the 5150 can throw at it! It has amazing low end for a 1x12!!!! But standing in front of a full 5150 stack is so amazing....
