cab suggestions?

ok im getting an orange micro terror cuz i want a small amp that can decent sound though headphones only but can be given a speaker and i belive it would be an upgrade to my current crappy 10w combo amp but i am curious in what 1x8 to get im currently stayin with family so am argueing between the randall rg8 35w, the orange ppc108 dark, or the orange ppc108. to my knowledge the only diff between the dark and the regular cabinet is color. idk. im probably when i move goin to get a decent 4x12 but thats a way off.

Re: cab suggestions?

well i was arguing between the micro dark an micro terror but this video kinda convinced me to go with the terror but the cab is what im caught on like im leaning toward the randall rg8 35w cab because price and when i get a 4x12 will proably be a randall. so idk. i mostly play punk and am using a mahogany explorer if it helps? the dark just seemed to metal to me

You can dial back. You can't dial forward.

Re: cab suggestions?

true.... to be honest this will be my first amp that wasnt a combo amp. also any idea how well they take pedals? i know they are hybrid so idk what that means or anything especially cuz i have VERY limited experience with any tubes.

Re: cab suggestions?

That video sucks for comparing those amps. You can make the Dark have that lower gain rock sound they dialed the Terror into, it's just there at lower gain settings.

You should read my threads about those amps, and you should get the Orange 1x12 cab because those 8" speakers are basically a joke, preferably an older used one with a Vintage 30, and the Micro Dark is literally better in every way than the Terror.

The Terror is like a cranked 70s rock thing no matter what, and the Dark can do that plus really good cleans, really heavy dirt, and a wider range of EQ options. They're both great amps, I've owned both, and i never say one piece of gear is "just plain better" than another but i make an exception in this one case.

Re: cab suggestions?

ok new thoughts!?

Explorer->Micro Dark (more vids changed my mind as empty pockets said that vid was kinda ****)->Peavey 1x12 Extension Guitar Cabinet? thoughts?

Re: cab suggestions?

The Peavey is probably fine to get you going. You can always swap speakers or get another cab down the line.

Re: cab suggestions?

I also believe the micro dark has a cab sim headphone out. I dont think the headphone out on the micro terror did(?)

I think you are on the right track there. I have found the Micro Terror through anything smaller than a 12 sounds like a practice amp vs. a gigging amp. With the 12 the sound blooms and the dynamics are more present. I play mine through a 1x15 cab typically, right now it is on top of my Marshall 2x12. The thing sounds fantastic. If the Peavey is in the budget, I think that is the way to go. If you can find a decent 2x12 used that might also be an option. When you upgrade to a 4x12, the Micro Terror still will have plenty of juice to push it.

For what its worth the Blue Marvel speakers in those Peavey cabs give you a lot of bang for your buck. Sure there are better speakers out there, but they are not lacking or offending in any way. I think you will get a dynamite tone with that combination.

I agree with empty pockets. Skip the 1x8 and find the extra 10 or 12" of floor space for a 1x12.

Re: cab suggestions?

Hughes & Kettner makes a decent 1x10, you can find them used at Guitar Center for around $100 - if you want something small, shouldn't go smaller than this.
