Cabinet choices ?

For playing old school rock & roll, blues, etc… at club levels using 22 ~ 40 watt (Fender or fender clone) heads.

Assume reverb and pedals are already in the mix and that guitars are Telecasters,Stratocaster, SG, or Les Pauls.

Be careful with your choice!

I voted for the 2x12. As good as a 4x12 closed back sounds, and my '65 blackface bassman sounds awesome though a MArshall cabinet, it still looks stupid with a Fender head. Image is everything.

Lightweight is key. closed back for chunky rock, two 12" speakers is the sound. just realize nothing sounds like anything else, each has its own sound.



I am saving up to convert the Orange 212 open back cabs to closed back since it weighs 45 pounds, and then I will put in Tonkerlite speakers to save 10 pounds. so they will weigh only 35 pounds for each cab!

I use Mesa Mark III and IV combos with a Mesa 112 Theile cab underneath. The combo has the airy tone of an open back, the Theile adds low end punch and projection. There aren't many situations I can't handle with this rig. Nice small footprint for tiny stages, and easier to transport than a 412.

Tremolux, Vibrolux, Bassman, Bandmaster, Pro Reverb and Super Reverb are all good choices for club gigs...as well as the Concert, Fender 75, Hot Rods and Supersonic.

I would go with the 2x12 open back, for looks and also because a 4x12 just is too much (to me) sometimes.

I voted 4x10 closed back because I use a Marshall 1965a with my Bassman. Sounds good and it's only 35lbs.

Personally, I would go with the 4x12. If for no other reason than so I don't have to bend over as much to fiddle with the knobs.

I don't see what difference it makes if a choice was listed twice, other than to look like the post needed editing. At any rate, I was paying attention, and as a result, I didn't vote. There is no closed back 2x10 choice.

Thats an oddball cabinet. I've never even heard of that. The Princeton combo runs a 1x10 open back, so why not I guess.

Avatar makes 2x10 cabs. I run a couple of them with GB 10s in them. I like them quite a bit!

As someone who has gigged clubs and pubs with both 4x12 cabinets and 2x12 combos, I would probably recommend something in a 2x12 size. A 2x12 has about half the potential volume of a 4x12 (half the speaker area given the same speakers at the same resistance = half the perceived volume), and is easier to lug around than a 4x12 cabinet.


(Oh, and I play punk and extreme metal, so speaking from an image perspective, I should probably say 4x12, but the tinnitus in my ears says "F*** YOU!", so yeah...)
