Cabinet Restoration Newbie

Hello, all! This is my first post here and its a bit of a doozy.

I have a 4 ohm Avatar bass cab that I'm looking to restore to its former glory. The felt material that covers the wood was already coming off in a few spots and then my cat shredded most of the rest of it. So I have a few questions:

1. Is there a step by step guide to doing this sort of project I could peruse?
2. How the hell to I get the rest of the felt covering material off? Should I just rip it? If it goes all wild and some doesn't come off, how do I remove the rest?
3. Any suggestions for materials I could use to cover it? I was almost thinking of just staining the wood and covering it with some super hard, super glossy top coat because I have worked with wood stain before so it shouldn't be that difficult. I'm not sure that hard wood is the look I want for it but I don't really know what else to do or where to start.

Any advice at all would be helpful. I'm moderately handy with super attention to detail and a fairly logical brain, so I can/am willing to handle tasks that aren't exactly easy in order to get the best result.

Cheers!
