Cabinet Suggestions?

Hey guys, I just scored a Peavey Triple XXX on eBay as my first venture from the Solid State world into the wondrous abode of tubes. :bigok: But now, I have to find a cabinet that will do the job!

I play in a gigging band that plays mostly metal, but I do need nice cleans too. I would need enough power for small to medium sized gigs. I've heard the long debate over the tone and convenience of 2x12's vs. 4x12's, but I can't decide what would be better.

I'm assuming a 4x12 would be ideal for a gigging guitarist because of the massive tone but I'm a little worried about having a huge 85lb cab to lug around in a car.

At the same time I'm worried that although a 2x12 is definitely more convenient, the tone won't be as huge or powerful as that of a 4x12. So this is a serious dilemma.

My first thought was Avatar cabs (G212H Custom or G412H, with closed back), because they have a Canadian dealer and their prices really kick ass. I don't have too much money to spend, my limit on a cab is probably around $700 Canadian... but I'd rather spend a lot less if I can.

Any other suggestions or thoughts I should really consider?

I did look at the Buzzbomb but the thing that threw me off is it's about $320 USD for just an empty cab... factor in the speakers and shipping and you're way up there.
I own two avatar 2x12s and recently got a BuzzBomb.

If you want cheap, go Avatar. If you want a huge sounding 2x12, get the Buzz Bomb. In this case, you get what you pay for. Nothing wrong with the Avatar but the Buzz Bomb sounds a lot bigger, especially in its bass response.

Two Avatar 2x12's?

Seriously, I use a pair of 2x12's live and I love the options I get from them. I use a Marshall JCM C212 cab and a Vox Buckingham cab (late 60's).

+1!

Re: Cabinet Suggestions?

get a 2x12 cab

I suggest mesa boogie since they are versatile and everyone is familiar with this product (good resale value etc)

if you need more just buy another 2x12

EARCANDY!!!!!

I bought the Buzzbomb and I'm now getting rid of ALL my 4X12s. Check out ebay and see how many Buzzbombs are for sale. 0...that's how many. If you buy it, and you don't like it you'll be able to sell it for pretty much what you paid for it because people would LOVE to get one, and not wait six weeks for one. Well, I guess as long as you don't get any weird color combinations or speakers that would hurt resale value.

This cabinet is very deep and projects really well and sounds just as full as most 4x12s. Great stuff.

Re: Cabinet Suggestions?

Ok, perhaps I should reconsider :D

Sounds like the Ear Candy stuff is definitely better than the Avatar... I'll look into it, but are you guys sure it's that much better?

Oh, gee. I dunno. Maybe if I'd played through both I could answer that question...

Re: Cabinet Suggestions?

One more thing: It will probably be a bit before I can get a cab for this head... I've heard that you can run a head through the Effects Return of a combo amp and use it as a cab; is this true? If so, would I use a speaker cable or a normal instrument cable? If not, what can I do about using the head in the meantime?
