Agreed, but in this case I also have to worry about where the amp sits vs. where the board sits on stage...

Actually, it shouldn't make too much of a difference if you have a decent buffer on your pedalboard.

Re: Cable length between effects loop & board

I do have a nice buffer in the VS Route 66 pedal... however that won't be in the loop :laugh2:

In the loop, cable runs shouldn't be a big deal unless your amp has a lousy FX loop.

True and if good cable is used, however, you also have to realize you would be doubling the distance, out and back, so 10 would be 20 and 20 would be 40 feet. That makes the cable add up quickly.

For these reason I've always wanted to test my electrical skills and design a remote switching box.

Re: Cable length between effects loop & board

The buffered signal will only be traveling 15-20 feet from my board to my amp. The 3 pedals I'll be placing in the loop will be the only ones having to traverse 2 long cables. The loop on my Rectoverb has an adjustable mix, but I can't speak of its quality yet...

You'll be fine. Mesas have good loops.

Excellent, thanks guys. 20 feet it is, better safe than sorry I always say :). I'd hate to have to run halfway back towards my amp to change channels after all ;).

Re: Cable length between effects loop & board

I originally tried a 10' cable from board to amp but I was way too close to the amp. There were only about 4' between amp and the back edge of the board. It was 3 feet to get the cable from my last stompbox to the back edge (closest to the amp) of the pedalboard and the amp's jacks were about 3' off the ground (head sitting on a 4x12). I didn't have much room to move and couldn't hear well standing right in front of the amp.

+1

i also used to use 10' for my pedals in the loop, but i switched to a few planet waves 20 footers for all the same reasons. and i have no complaints with it

Re: Cable length between effects loop & board

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I use a 2x12 cab though, so I need to get even a little further away if I want to use the cab as a rear or sidewash monitor.
