cable suggestions please

Re: cable suggestions please

i like spectraflex cables.
I also like cables that don't break. Those kinds of cables are good cables. Good cables don't break.
I can imagine people's headaches being doubled by their endless search for the right pickups compounded by the search for the right cables......and then getting into a fit about the back and front side of a guitar cable!
What's next? Do I have to face the big dipper and play in order for the stars to align to get great tone?

Re: cable suggestions please

I don't think the issue is whether there is a difference or not. Different materials = different operation. The issue is the whole "better" thing.

I just googled Evidence cables.... $155 for a 20' cable? Are you guys serious?

Cripes! they're 155 for a 20'? You guys are nuts!

I'll stick with my spectraflex cables.

Ask Larry the Cable Guy and get his professional opinion. ;)

I think Zachary Vex is spot on. The whole cable break in thing is a joke as is the "sounds better on one end" thing. Any electrician can tell you that as long as both ends are terminated exactly the same, there won't be a difference - electrical current flows in both directions anyhow ("AC" = alternating current).

I have found a difference in cables, some relatively subtle and some not so much. Speaker cable is well worth investing in - I got a night and day difference from going with Mulder Audio from the Pro Co and others I used to use. As far as regular guitar cables, just go with something that's made well and is reliable. Monster cables are relatively junk, Planet Waves is pretty good (although some of the plugs are a little bit thicker than they should be - causes problems with some jacks). I still think Canare cable and a good end like Neutrik or G&H sounds great. Live Wire is a good brand that always seems to get overlooked. Belden makes some really good audio cable that's radically overlooked as well (atleast for guitar purposes - recording studios seem to see them as an industry standard). For patch cables (inbetween your pedals), I really like the Bill Lawrence Wilde set and the best part is that it's cheap as well. My longer cables are Lava ELC, but I don't think if I went with Canare it would break my setup. I'm really compelled to try that Vovox stuff, but the price is astronomical so I'd much rather put my money towards studio equipment. For my taste, I like the lower capacitance stuff, seems to let my highs through better (which is a good thing for the longer runs I use). That's essentially why my cables are Lava ELC and Bill Lawrence.

Excerpt: "This comparison will not list specifications such as capacitance, DC resistance and inductance, as these serve to falsely lead consumers. While each is important to achieving certain results, they don’t follow the same formula and are not final determinants of performance."

Well... if he did take out the only parameters that can be measurable, the whole thing is just B.S.

Excerpt: "Prior to critical listening, I burned each cable in for 60-100 hours with a pink noise generator." Here the B.S. flag went up!

Well, that's it. A fine written article by Erik Kirkland, professional B.S.'er.
