Cable testing(review and decision inside)

last saturday i was at the local store to get a full supply of new cables. The ones i used where kinda old and not of the highest quality and i wanted to get something good to be done with the cable thing.

So what i tryed where the following four:
Monster Rock
George Ls
Planet Waves Custom Series
Sommer Cable The Spirit XXLs

I tried all of them in front of an Engl Sovereign 1x12 they had at the store and had a 20 foot going to a morley bad horsie wah and a 20 foot going from wah to amp(i thought i should check extreme lengths to get a good comparison and also those were the lenghts that were readily testable).

Both the Monster and George Ls had great clear sound with all the high end detail you could want but i didn't hear any difference in tone between the two of them. They were noisless, easy to roll up up and seemed sturdy. But on both i wondered why the plug/cable connection seems so fragile. They are probably as durable as anything but the plugs look kinda thin and easy to rip off. Damn pricey though.

The Planet Waives custom cables looked great, felt great and were packaged great, but the sound was lacking compared to the two before. There was less high end and it acutally sounded like there was more noise going on with these cables. Overall they are not worth it imo since they cost the same as the George Ls

The Spirit XXL is what surpirsed me the most out of all the cables i tryed. The highs aren't as aggressive as with Monster or George L but the interessting thing is that it sounds like the frequency range of these cables is more balanced, meaning that not only the highs get hrough better but also the bass gets tighter and the mids more detailed(hard to describe for me but i hope the diea gets accross). But those cables totally took the award for best dynamics in my book beating the other three makers(not by much tough) and they are also massive as hell(both the plugs and the cable), i can't see anything destroying these cables, but they still remain easy to roll up and handle. They also look cool because of the clear outside showing the spiral isolation(makes it look like a clear USB cable). Best thing was that those are also the cheapest(maybe because they are produced here in germany and we might get better prices here). This cables takes my vote both for sound and price.

In the end i walked out with 2x10ft 1x20ft and 3x1ft patch 2x2ft patch of Spirit XXLs and payed less than for any of the other cables. Great feeling moment;)

If you are in germany or the EU i recommend those Sommer cables to you(i hadn't tryed them before but testing them was kind of an eye-opener), since they are hard to beat for price and sound on the european market(probably way different outside of the EU)

I have been considering adding the XXL's to my product line. I currently carry the Spirit Standard and the Stratos. Nice review! Maybe I will buy a roll of XXL...

I use Trace Allen's "Voodoo Amps" cables....Best cables I've ever used! I also like George L and use that between my effects and to my amp...Trace's cables seem to keep the lows in place and the tone is clear and complex with no loss of overtones...The cables are thick and don't coil all up and the connectors are large and robust...That's all I use these days!
I use the more expensive V50/50 cable..Read the reviews at the bottom of the page.

Jeremy.....No comparison buddy...Trace's cables are great(really)....The George Ls are crisper, but Trace's cables seem to keep the lows or enhance the lows a bit,but you notice this extra sought of overtones or whatever or a sense of more overall volume from your amp with Trace's cable...It's the only cable I Now use between my guitar and amp,but I do still use George L between effects...

I did A/B straight into my Marshall head with Trace's cable compared to George L,Monster, and the Planet Waves cable that has the on/off switch on one end....Trace's cable is just beefier sounding, and clear, plus the cable ends are really big and robust...We both know Trace and he doesn't mess around with crappy or wimpy tone!

I bought the 15 foot 50/50 cable that has a 90 on one end and a straight end on the other...Great cable, worth trying for sure! If I had a second one,I'd let you try it....

I've been a fan of the George L's for quite some time. I have made 3 pedalboards (soon to be 4) and I have wired all of them with George L's. LoserCHef it sounds like you were trying the pre made George L's. I use a few of these, but I prefer to buy the cable and make my own. If you are not aware of it you can buy this cable in both .155 for patch cables and .225 for regular cables. You can also buy ends that just screw on, so you can make your own length cables at any moment. The beauty to these (and the planet waves) is if the cables break you can unscrew the end, trim the break out and reconeect the cable and this can be done in between songs if needed. That being said I have never had a problem with the George L's I have used. Great reliability and great sound.! I use the thicker cables to attach my amp to pedalboard and guitar to pedalboard. I use the thin cable to attch all the effects.
