cables?

...just wondering how many of you prefer monster patch cables over george l's and vice versa...i use 6" monsters for my effects, but am doing a complete overhaul on my board to accomodate a new tru bypass loop switcher...at $20.00 a pop for a 6" gold plated cable, things could get pricey if i stick with monster...how do the george l's compare?

Re: cables?

Bill Lawrence. Much better than George Ls, and you get 50' of cable with it. I will not use anything else- honestly, they are that good.

Check them out here.

That looks good, but I have to have the 90s. I have George Ls on my board now, but was disappointed when I measured resistance on a cable that "sounded " like it was working fine.

Anyway, now I'm considering just buying some Switchcraft ends and soldering all my short cables.

Re: cables?

that is an option too. i refuse to buy Monster's overpriced offerings when I can make my own for cheaper. Most companies offer lifetime warranties now, so it isn't an exclusive thing. A tube amp isn't really transparent anyway, so as long as it sounds ok and is well made, I don't freak out about things like cables anymore. I'd rather just play.

Re: cables?

I've used George L's for the past couple of years, but I was recently given some Core X2 kits to try out, and I've ended up re-doing my board and longer cables with it. Not as open in the top end as George L's, but that doesn't always mean better tone. These are also DIY kits, and they're a better design than the George L's, which often break through their casing, particularly on the .155 with angle jacks. http://www.coreoneproduct.com/pages/corex2web/DIYGK20index.html

Is the cable more flexible than the George L?

Core X2 is good cable for the money but the darn things are as stiff as a garden hose. I've got a couple of 12" ones with a straight plug and then a 90 degree jack (nice for wah pedals and axis fuzz due to weird knob location) but its got to be the most inflexible thing I've ever seen. They bend one direction a given about and thats it.

For given applications they are great for the money but trying to wire up a board with them where you need some flexibility is rather frustrating

Re: cables?

Yeah, I have a couple of Core X cables .... 10 or 12 ft.
Once you roll 'em up you can use 'em for a hoola hoop.
I just keep them for spares. They sound OK but they're incredibly stiff.

Re: cables?

For what its worth concerning cables as well, ive really found that once your jamming, you just don't notice if your board is wired with George L, Monster, Mogami, Planet Waves, Lave Cable, Core, etc etc

I've seen cables costing over $200 for 10 feet! Thats just insane to me. You could be looking at droping a grand just wiring everything up.

If your spending $1000 on cable you'd better darn well have some nice rig is all I can say because going into a Dynacomp or other modern MXR tonesucker would sure be a waste otherwise LOL

Bottom line is that as long as its a good name brand and you take care of it, it will serve you well. You'll find fans of each and every brand.

Just like strings, you've got D'Addario people and Ernie Ball people. Which is better ? Who knows, they both will get the job done.

Pickups, amps, speaker types, carbon battery in the fuzz, not tightening the screw on the battery door, you name it, guitarist can obsess over it and it doesn't really get you anywhere.

Re: cables?

I've noticed a huge difference between cables, but whether or not the difference is worth it to you is a whole different story. I'm using Lava ELC for the big runs and Bill Lawrence for the patch cable stuff and Mulder Audio speaker cable and am very happy with it. Maybe at some point I'll spring for Vovox, but it's certainly not cheap cable and it'd really have to be worth it. For recording I've been using Gotham Audio GAC-3 cable. Compared to some of the cheaper microphone cable I've used in the past I've been pleasantly surprised by the change of tone.

Can you perform with cheap cables? Absolutely and I'm sure you can still sound great with them, but if you're looking for more brightness and clarity out of a cable, then you'll want a low capacitance cable and if you're playing in less than ideal locations, well shielded cable is a big plus. Sometimes it's the little things that can make all the difference. I'm not advocating running out and spending a few thousand on one of those crazy, "audiophile" cables, but there is a difference between say Lava's medium to high end line and more over the counter type stuff like Monster, Canare, or Livewire.

...agreed...i've already got some $..invested in monster so i'll be sticking with them..haven't let me down yet....and just to put it out there...i run a 12' to my board into wah-comp-ts9-flange-vulume/tuner-amp...and an eq and delay running in the fx loop....the fx loop send and return, as well as board to input are 21'...being convinced that the 21' was sucking tone, i mic'd the amp and recorded the same riff through a 3', 12', and 21' cable...the result was not what i expected...the shorter cable provided a little more brightness than the longer ones, but nothing to lose sleep over...so like you said.."when you're into the jam, you're not worrying about cable quality and tru bypass etc... .

Re: cables?

IMHO going from prvt label/cheapo cables to something decent makes a noticeable and worthwhile difference. After that, it's all (possibly overpriced) mojo. I do hear more high end through George Ls than anything else I've tried but actually don't like them for the guitar cable. Gimme Neutrik plugs with a really solid clamp on the cable and well-shielded cable with low capacitance and I'm good to go there.

For pedals, these little boogers make sense where you can use them at $10 each and virtually zero capacitance. Otherwise, the George L pedalboard kit is great. (Don't like their straight plugs though - too easy to punch through the shield into the core.)

Haven't tried the Core X2 products and they may be the bomb if WahWah says so.

+1 to what millsart said...

I'm a Spectraflex guy. Look 'em up. All I know is they sound great, and haven't given me any problems whatsoever. I especially like em cuz you can order them in custom configurations. The last cable I've bought in a while. Why try anything else? Highly recommended.

Re: cables?

ive always been happy with planet waves myself. as someone mentioned however, switching between waves, george l, morgami or whatever will probably not yield a better quality tone. the difference should be so subtle that if you can honestly detect it then you probably have some of the best hearing in the world, lol
