Cabronita wiring help

Howdy.

Working on a Cabronita build. It's drilled for 2 pots. Previous owner had a tone & volume with a 3 way toggle.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing or maybe 2 volumes? What are the advantages to either? What caps do people use?

Where are some wiring diagrams for either setup? I am using Gretsch Filtertrons.

Wordup!

Re: Cabronita wiring help

If your running two volumes you shouldn't need a cap. But if you want a tone, I'd go with .022. That's what most Gibsons use.

Just take this and remove the tone from the circuit.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

Well, I'd think the biggest drawback would be getting rid of a tone control, which I would need, although I know it isn't essential for everyone. Or, are you talking about keeping a tone control? I can only speak from my experience, but I know you can get more interesting variations of tone with 2 volumes, but it always seemed like any of those variations might take 2 moves to get to the right sound. I know LP players love this, but I could never get used to it.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

I like the idea of two volumes. I will often set the neck volume lower on my les pauls to get a better middle position balance, or to get a clean tone on a slightly dirty channel.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

Lots of people seem to run cabronitas with no tone control. I'd be interested in hearing the pros/cons of tone or no tone control.

And then yea, how to wire it for either setup.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

I would think that with Filtertrons you'd want to have some ability to reduce the treble occasionally. I like the idea of having two volume controls rather than one master control, but I don't think I could do without a master tone control (I use my tone controls a lot).

Re: Cabronita wiring help

After looking I don't see what I need

I decided on 1 volume and 1 tone with a 3 way toggle

The trons are 2 conductor. Can't find a diagram for that?

Re: Cabronita wiring help

Pickups with 2 conductors are wired the same as 4 conductors, you just ignore the red and white wires that are connected together in diagrams.

Thanks!

Last dumb question---should I be grounding this to the bridge? Or does it matter?

Re: Cabronita wiring help

If you want your guitar to be buzzy/noisy without any way of stopping it, feel free to leave the bridge ground off.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

Thats ok, I never trouble myself with universal approval. The info is good as an upside.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

Apologies for being a moron. I still can't get this.

My switchcraft 3 way toggle does not have the same layout as the SD diagram. Instead of a ground on one side and 4 contacts on the other I have 2 contacts on each side and one ground.

Even if I ignore the red & white wires I still only have 2 wires coming out of my Filtertrons. Not 3 like the SD diagram.

Am I overthinking this? Yes. Am I being stupid? Yes

Do I want/need help? Yes. Thank you universe.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

I am guessing the 3 way toggle is more like a LP switch, reading between the lines. You should be able to look at the tabs and see that they connect to wafers that have contact with each other depending on the switch position.

The centre tab is usually the grounded one and is thicker, and should attach to the chassis of the switch. The other 2 pairs are the input and output for each pickup. Either pair of 2 will do for both input and output. But as the output tabs get bent together and soldered to the 1 wire, its best to choose the physically closer ones. But the over-riding choice is usually putting the output on the side that the ground is not on.

Re: Cabronita wiring help

Thanks man. Appreciate it.

I think the toggle is worked out.

I still dont' get what wire goes where

Re: Cabronita wiring help

tonights work resulted in noises coming out when plugged in and lots of static when I touch the knobs

Guessing grounding issue

In the previous post, what wire going where didn't you get??
Maybe a pic of the wiring job.....what wattage iron have you got?? I like 45-50w as you get that heat blast that makes the back of pot wiring go smoothly. The solder should look like a solidified puddle, and not be a lump.
All solder should be nice and smooth + shiny meaning the whole joint was hot and cooled all at the same time - and there should not really be lots of brown 'flux stains' surrounding it.

Static can be variable and can have various causes not related to poor joins.

Reflow all joins and look to the jack as well - if you have braided wire check that you don't have physical/touching connection on other parts.
